INDUSTRIES WEEK IN CROMWELL
ARRANGING FOR EXHIBITION Messrs C. W. J. Roberts (Mayor), G. Stumbles, E, Jolly, H. Bowie, A. F. Key, John Stephens, J. A. Gordon, J. R. Munro, William Jelley, George Wishart, C. C. Sanders, George Burrows, N. C. Yeoman, F. W. Partridge, and J. L. Stewart Wright attended a meeting in the Council Chambers, Cromwell, on Monday evening last, when the Mayor reported on the result of his mission to Dunedin.
' Mr Roberts said he commenced work at 9 'a.m. in Dunedin on Monday of Inst week, and finished up at 11 p.m. on Saturday. He had had a busy week, but it was wonderful. The way ip which the Dunedin manufacturers, one after another, heartily took up the proposal to exhibit their goods in Cromwell could not be described as other than wonderful.
Reports were received from the Hall Committee advising that arrangements had been successfully completed for the use of both the Athenaeum and Oddfellows’ Halls for the display of manufacturers’ exhibits, while the Publicity and Display Committee reported steps taken- to ensure publicity for the exhibition. The Mayor stated that Mr Arthur Barnett had generously the committee a loan of his “ Mrs Hippo’s Mechanical Band,” which had proved a very great attraction in Dunedin. The secretary was instructed to write Mr Barnett thanking him and advising that the band would be assembled by a competent motor engineer. It was reported that the Railways Department had agreed to make a conces sion on freights of all goods consigned to the exhibition, and that all goods would be taken back to Dunedin free of charge if certified as having been for exhibit only.. Several matters of detail were left to the respective sub-committees and the secretary. The postmaster, Mr Burrows, agreed to make the necessary arrangements with the various broadcasting stations for publicity for the exhibition “ on the air.”
It was resolved that charges for admission shall be Is for adults for the evening sessions and 6d for the afternoons, that children should be admitted free during the afternoons and charged 6d at night, and that season tickets admitting to all openings should be sold at 2s Od. The secretary was instructed to write to all school committees in the district bringing before the committee the exhibition, and advising that children, if accompanied by their teacher or a responsible person, would be admitted free.
It w-as decided to approach Mr Leo. Paterson with a request that he would supervise the street decorations and to ask the co-operation of the Power Board in the matter of street illuminations and extra lighting for the halls. Arrangements would also be made for the utilisation of the labour of the unemployed in the work of street decorations,
Mr Les Jolly, from whom an apology for non-attendance was received, reported that his committee had the wo'rk of musical programmes for each evening well in hand. It was decided to invite the Upper Clutha Fruitgrowers’ Association to make an exhibit of Otago Central apples. The secretary was instructed to secure the “ Rahui ” premises for additional space ps both halls had been fully booked. 1 It was resolved that no selling of merchandise in opposition to local businesses be permitted either in the halls or in the street. Mr G. C. Sanders agreed to supply a fat bullock and sheep for a live-weight guessing competition.
