C. Gieseler has been appointed private trainer to Mr J. M. Samson, and the Dunedin owner’s horses will be transferred to Wingatui. The addition of such a big team to the horses in training at Wingatui will add greatly to the interest taken in the, track work., * Night Maid is now being trained by T Hobbs at Waimate. Aberfelcly continues to show satisfactory, work in his schooling lessons. The Ashburton winter programme for June 27 will include a hurdle race and a hack and hunters’ steeples. It is reported that the Wanganui Jockey Club lost £2OOO on the season’s operations > Taragona, who won over a mile and aquarter at Ashburton, has been training on satisfactorily, and should saddle up well when next seen out.

Saunders left yesterday on a trip to Sydney, and will return in time for the Trentbam winter -meeting. Hazlett, of Invercargill, now owns Miss Fleetham, the dam of The. Smuggler. Miss Fleetham has a foal to Anomaly, and is in foal to Balboa. Mr Hazlett exchanged a collie dog for Miss Fleetham. His friends say that Miss Fleetham actually cost Mr Hazlett nothing, as they humorously allege that the collie dog returned to his old home. When the war broke out Lucullus was a German-owned horse in England, and, when commandeered,,was put up to auction. Prices at the outbreak of war dropped to next to nothing, and Lucullus was sold at 25 guineas. Since his arrival in New Zealand, Lucullus has sired winners of over 125,00050v5. Lloyd, and Desert Song and Adelpin are still spelling. Gay Crest is coming to hand satisfactorily, and on Tuesday strode out well in exercise on the sand. The rising two-year*o!d by Limond from Aspie, who has not yet had a name claimed for him, has grown into a solid looking youngster, and would remind one of Commendation at the same age. Ho has had a few easy sprints of late, and yesterday was accompanied in a short spin by a two-year-old filly by Robespierre from Lady Minerva, who is being prepared by C. Emerson for the Messrs Storry. The latter shows a lot of promise, and has attracted much attention since visiting the tracks. Mapy horses less seriously injured than Billy Boy was four years ago, when tak ing part in a hunt in the Waikato, have been destroyed. At that time (says the Auckland Star) Billy Boy was owned by Mr H. Rothery, who bred him, and the gelding was a of Glendowie who won the Great Northern Steeplechase three years ago. When jumping -a fence in the hunting field, Billy Boy cut his off hind leg so severely that it was feared he would have to be destroyed hut Mr Rothery had such a high opinion of the son of Archiestown that everything possible was done, and with care and attention the wound slowly healed. How ever, progress was slow, and Billy Boy was turned out into a paddock for three years before it was decided to put him into work. He was then purchased by Mr G. J. Quirke. and went into the'stable of R. Lewis, at Onehunga. Being a good jumner, BiHy Bov soon gave promise of making good, and in three starts he has had a third, a second, and a win, his victory being registered on Saturday in tne Hunt Cup.
