RAILWAY IMPROVEMENTS The residents of Port Chalmers and along the harbourside greatly appreciate the improvements which have recently been made in the second class seating accommodation of the carriages. The carriages have been thoroughly renovated, and the improvements are of such a character that passengers have been provided with every comfort as regards seating accommodation. It is to be hoped that the Railways Department will have all the second class carriages fitted out in a similar manner as early aa possible. • RELIEF WORKS Very useful work is being carried out in various partp of the borough by relief workers under the Unemployment Board’s No. 5 scheme. The men are chiefly engaged in widening street corners and carrying out improvements on the Borough Council reserves. This week a total of 70 men is working under the supervision of the council’s foreman. BILLIARDS TOURNAMENT Billiards players from the Port Chalmers Bowling Club spent several enjoyable hours this week, when they competed in the tournament for the Henaghan Banner. On Tuesday evening the Port Chalmers team, consisting of Messrs W. G. Love, T. Mathewson, C. Braithwaite, and Timlin played against a team from the Kaikorai Bowling Club in the latter’s pavilion. On Wednesday evening the Kaikorai Club’s team journey to Port Chalmers, where the second series of games was played in the new pavilion at Mussel Bay. The Port Chalmers team consisted of Messrs J. H. Crawford, W. G. Love, T. Mathewson, and Captain Page. The games at both pavilions were keenly contested. The Kaikorai team won the two series of games.
