SOUTH DUNEDIN HOTELS
MEETING OF LICENSING COMMITTEE The annual meeting of the South Dunedin Licensing Committee was held yesterday, and was attended by Messrs J. R. Bartholomew, S.M. (in the chair), A. A. Campbell, J. J. Marlow, A. Smiley, R. Telfer, and J, Adam. The chairman sajd that the police report called for little comment. The conduct of the hotels was satisfactory. There had been no convictions against any licensee during the year, but there were two convictions in cases where persons had been found illegally on licensed premises. The conditions regarding tepair of premises were also satisfactory, only two or three minor requirements being riecessary. In connection with the Bay View Hotel, "Inspector Cummings said that since the police report had been submitted the police had paid a visit to the hotel after hours, and had’ found three men on the /premises, one of them having a glass of beet in his hand. He understood, that the licensee (Herbert Charles Mountney) was ill at the time and in bed, and/the men had been supplied: by the barman, who had since been dismissed. Mr Irwin said that the facts_ were admitted. The licensee was not interested in the breach in this case; the breach had been made by the barman. The chairman said that the license would beyrenewed, but the licensee, and other licensees, must exercise _ greater supervision in the conduct of their premises'/*. ■■■ Applications for the renewal of licenses were also granted as follows: —Charles Gordon Shand, Fitzroy Hotel (Mr F. C. Dawson); William John Hargreaves, Ocean View Hotel (Mr J, Lang); Martin Quirk, St. Kilda Hotel (Mr B. S., Irwin); John Herbert Pearson, Ocean Beach Hotel (Mr C. A. Hamer); Matthew Henry Dawson, Parkside Hotel (Mr E. J. Anderson); Robert Kirkcaldie Aitehison, Waterloo Hotel (Mr B. S. Irwin). In connection with the Waterloo Hotel, Inspector Cummings said he did not know how the licensee, was going to carry on in view of the" rent he had to pay.
