MILTON, June 8. X UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF. A further slight increase is recorded to-day in the registrations at the Milton Post Office of i local and district unemployed men, the figures having reached their highest total to date—l 22. Arrangements have been made for employment during the current week for 60 men by the Bruce County Council, 36 by the Milton Borough Council, 6 at the Fairfax Cemetery, 6 by the Tpko Domain Board, 5 by the Toko River Board, and 1 at the Toko High School. MAIL SERVICES.

With the restricted train services, on the Milton-Roxburgh branch line since June 1, the morning conveyance of firstclass mails (letters only) between Milton and post offices en route to Roxburgh is being temporarily carried out by the White Star Motor Service. Second-class mail (newspapers and parcels) is delayed until the train service. GRADING MAIN ROADS. To effect economy in the ever-increas-ing cost of maintaining <the portion of the Dunedin-Invercargill main highway running through Bruce County, the County Council has.decided to invite tenders tor a contract for grading that portion of the highway from the. Taien ferry bridge to Clarksville Junction It; w anticipated that a considerable saving will be effected on the present system of grading by the council’s workmen on day labour. PERSONAL. Mr Gerald W. Lane, secretary to the Bruce Woollbn Manufacturing Company, Ltd., has received a similar appointment with the Mosgiel Woollen Manufacturing Company. Ltd., with headquarters at Dunedin, and will assume his new duties on July 1. Mr Lane has been associated with the Bruce Woollen Mills office staff for 10 years, during the past four years as secretary to, the company. He has always manifested a keen interest m local sports activities, as an active Playing member of the- Toko Football Club (and South Otago ex-representative player), and also in lawn tennis and golf. Mr William George Baird, who has been promoted to the position of assistant Public Trustee at Wellington, and assumed his duties last week, is a son ol Mr and Mrs R. Baird, of Milton. He received his scholastic education at til Allanton School, with the exceptiom oi 12 months at the Mosgiel High School. On leaving school he joined the lublic Trust Office as a cadet in 1906 at Wei lington, under the late Mr J. W. 1 ton, and with the exception of two years at Christchurch during the war Period, has always been connected with the Wellington office. LADIES’ HOCKEY.

Only one South Otago Shield match was played on Saturday afternoon, Bruce A defeating Milton B on the latter s ground by seven goals to nil. Milton A had the bye in the northern division, while the match Bruce B v. Lawrence was posupdned owing to the inclement weather. The Bruce Club has nominated two teams for the A Grade competition and one in the B Grade for the South Otago seven-a-side tournament, to be held at Milton next Saturday, and will be represented as follows:—A Grade: No. 1 team —Misses Z.
