CAMBRIAN SOCIETY OF OTAGO

THIRD ANNUAL MEETING The third annual meeting of the Cambrian Society of Otago was field in Lake’s Restaurant last Monday evening. There was a small attendance of members, presided over by Mr W. J. Williams. The annual report stated that the past year was commenced under very unfavourable circumstances, but, thanks to the efforts of an energetic and enthusiastic committee, a considerable improvement in the affairs of the society was effected before the close of the year. It was pleasing to be able to state that an increasing interest was being taken in the affairs of the society. This was reflected in the improved attendances at the monthly meetings, which were poorly attended at the beginning of the year. The club suffered the loss by death of one of its first members in the person of Mr E. Lloyd. Much correspondence passed between the secretary and that of the Wellington Society with regard to the gift of a Bardic chair for the next Eisteddfod. Latest news to hand showed that the response had not been such that the gift could be forwarded this year, trade depression against being responsible for the delay. In September a letter was received from the Wellington Society asking that delegates might be sent to a public reception which was. tendered to her Excellency, Lady Bledisloe. Through lack of funds it was found impossible to send a delegate, but the good wishes of all members were forwarded. Two vacancies in the executive during the year were ably filled by Mr J. E. Davies and Mr S. J. Lyon. The number of financial members at present was 36. A very successful concert was conducted by the pupils of the Caversham School to augment the funds of the society. Special thanks were accorded them for their good work and a return social evening was given them in February. It was pleasing to state that the funds of the Society were improving, and if members would rally during the coming year the future of the society would be assured. St. David’s Day was celebrated in a mast fitting manner. A church service was conducted by the Rev. Mr Mead at the Congregational Church on March 1, and on Monday evening a social gathering was held. _ Several visitors from kindred societies were present, no fewer than five different societies being represented. It poved to be the largest function the society had held. The thanks of the society were due to the various officers for their good work during the year, which proved a very strenuous one for the secretary and treasurer. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, the chairman congratulated the society on its success during the year. The election of office-bearers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:—President, Mr J. E. Davies; vice-presidents— Mrs Charles Isaacs, Mr T. Lyons, and Mr W. J. Williams; secretary, Mr M. Jenkins; minute secretary and treasurer, Mrs E. A. Williams; reception officer, Mrs C. Grace; committee, Mrs Cartwright and Miss A. Carr; publicity officer, Mr P. O. Wheatley; librarian, Mrs Lake; pianist, Miss E. Frye, L.T.C.L.; programme organiser, Mr J. E. Davies: stewards, Mrs M'Kinnon and Mr F. Williams. It was resolved to change the meetings to the second Tuesday of each month.
