STRUGGLE WITH DEATH IN TOE ARCTIC <ammsst H / <:' - v i’' : ’h m m mm 9 h* v r sgs v WlteCtMXy < ■ S ' 'I M m .■ m Y;M # Mi Mg* 1 *w->. pmmm m „> '*’■-•■• i w ;I■ . K. Kane, who penetrated the polar regions in search of the lost Sir John Franklin, describes the evils with which malnutrition cursed his heroic effort. Compare Kane’s utterance with that of Donald B. McMillan, who knew from experience the folly of refined foods such as Kane carried: "Four years of eating whole wheat biscuits, chocolate, dried fruits and vegetables have convinced me that I could live indefinitely in the Arctic upon such foods. During the entire period I suffered no disturbance either of digestion or of intestinal action, due, I believe, to the use of whole wheat.” Kane’s supplies consisted of white flour biscuits, dried meat, and a small stock of dried fruits and vegetables, which was only too soon exhausted. Kane, though he had the medical knowledge of his time, did not know that these foods are deficient in the minerals and vitamins necessary to life and health, and that their continued use would lead to ill-health and complete collapse. The whole wheat that enabled McMillan to withstand the rigours of the Arctic for four unbroken years would have saved Kane. But Kane knew no more of the laws of nutrition than do most housewives and mothers to-day, who, through ignorance, are inflicting hardship upon themselves, their husbands, and their children. What we can learn from Dr. Kane’s Fate. The human body is made up of some sixteen minerals and four vitamins. Without them man cannot live. The body derives them from food alone. If they have been removed from much of our food, we suffer ill-health. If they have been totally removed we die. Modern refining processes succeed in removing most of the minerals and vitamins from our daily food. The result is that we in our daily lives, on a diet of refined foods, develop the same condition of mineral starvation that Kane and his men did. That condition is less severe only according to the amount of milk, fruits, vegetables which we cat and they did not have. Most of us are only half alive! Upon just how much of our daily food is robbed of its precious minerals and vitamins, depends the question of whether at forty we shall have blood pressure, heart trouble, frayed nerves; whether from childhood we shall suffer from constipation, poor teeth,- impoverished blood. Modern refined foods are the cause of more ill-health and suffering than any other single factor in our daily lives. When nature made the whole wheat grain, as used for Granose and Sweetweets, she packed into it every one of the minerals and vitamins the body needs for health and strength. When man made white flour he removed these precious elements* and we and our children have to pay a heavy price for his carelessness. We will continue to pay that price so long as we place our faith in refined foods, and keep from our diet the wholesome natural foods nature intended we should have. We must get back to the whole wheat that enabled McMillan to win through four years in the Arctic, and away from the refined foods that brought disaster to Kane and so many others. : e ; Where can we get 100 per cent. Whole Wheat? There is only one source of 100 per cent, whole wheat —that is wheat as nature intended it should be eaten, rich in all the vital elements for health, strength, and resistance to disease. That source is the whole wheat cereal, such as Granose and Sweetweets. Made from flaked whole grains of wheat, with not one element removed, Granose and Sweetweets contain in abundance the minerals and vitamins necessary to health. Granose and Sweetweets are the foundations of the perfect natural diet nature planned for us when she fashioned this marvellous earth. Commence with them to-day. Banish from your diet the foods which brought disaster to Dr. Kane, and set forth, with your children, upon the road to new health, strength, and vitality, new freedom from civilised ills and ailments.
