BROADSIDING.

AN EXCITING MEETING. KEEN, CLOSE FINISHES. A crowd of about 3000 people saw what was probably one of the most exciting meetings seen at the stadium this year. The riding in most of the events was of a high standard, and the finishes were, as a rule, remarkably close, and such as to leave the final issue in doubt almost till the riders flashed past the post. . , The racing was characterised by a number of falls, and, unfortunately, as the result of one of these, Bishop, the brilliant Australian broadsider, was carried from the track with a broken leg. He had been riding with his usual dash, and his meeting with Mattson was being eagerly awaited when, in the first semi-final of the Forbury Handicap, he was thrown from his machine in the opening lap. Coming round on his second lap, Grieve was unable to avoid him, and he ran into the prostrate Australian, himself crashing to the track. It was feared that Bishop, in addition _ to a fractured leg, had received severe internal injuries, but an inquiry at the Hospital yesterday revealed that an X-ray examination had disclosed only a broken bone. The presence of Anderson, Mattson, and Kilmister, in addition to Bishop, indicated that the racing would be keen, and such proved to be the case. Once again Mattson showed out to greater advantage than Kilmister, though the latter rode well, while Anderson lived up to the promise which he gave on his previous appearance. , , ii Day, Unwin, and Eanby also rode vs ell, but, were outclassed by the first four broadsiders. ' , The local riders were again on the track, and some very good racing was seen both in the Second Division Handicap and the Local Handicap,_ while several gave very fair displays in . the other events. / , . „ It was rather an unusual experience for Mangham to ride unplaced in an event, as the case in the Forbury Handicap, but he made amends for this later when he won his heat in the Champions’ Scratch Race and rode into second place in the final. Mention must be made of the manner in which the meeting was conducted, the programme of 16 events being run on in less than two hours. The following are the results:— FORBURY handicap. First Heat.—P. Lyders, 6sec,l; B Unwin, Isec, 2. Also started: L. Homer 6sec, C.'Anderson scr. This was a great race. Homer’s machine refused to start, and he fell out Lyders shot away in dashing style, with Unwin and Anderson in hot pursuit.: AH three were riding well, but entering the third lap Anderson came oft. He remounted and continued Unwin was still hard on Lyders s heels, but the local rider was not to be beaten, and in a desperate finish he beat the Australian by a wheel. Time, 98 2-ssec. ' Second Heat—W. Grieve, 6see, 1; J. Bishop, scr, 2. Also started: F. Day 2sec, A. Rait 4sec. Bishop got away to a good start, and was in third position as ne came out of the first bend. _ Grieve was in the lead, with Rait following him, but- in the second lap Bishop moved up to second place. Day was last, and he fell out before the finish with a broken chain. Grieve was riding well, and, despite a strong challenge by Bishop, he finished with a lead of eight yards. Time, 94 l-ssec. ' Third Heat.—W. Kilmister, scr, 1: W. Blair, ssec, 2. Also started; H. Mangham Isec, R. Ranby 3see. A good start saw ■ the riders fairly well • bunched as they finished the first lap. Mangham crashed on the north bend entering the third, and in the fourth Kilmister forged to the front to beat Blair by 30 yards, with Ranby five yards further back, lime, 91 l-ssec. Fourth Heat.—A. Mattson, scr, 1; J. Young, 4sec, 2. Also started: J. Nisbet 4sec, A. Anderson 6sec t Young snot into the lead as the riders stretched put up the-first straight. Anderson crashed on the south bend in the second lap, and Nisbet’s machine at almost the same spot in the third leaped into the air. By some miraculous means Nisbet kept his seat, and, bringing his careering mount once more under control, roared up the straight after the others. At the next bend, however, he was flung high into the air to crash heavily to the track. Mattson meanwhile had caught up on Young, and passed him halfway through the last lap, going on to win by 90 yards. Time, 90 3-ssec. . , \ First Semi-final.—Unwin 1, Lyders 2. Also started: Bishop and Grieve. Bishop came off early in the first lap. Coming round in the second lap Grieve went right over the Australian and also came to grief, while at the same time Lyders parted company with his machine. He remounted, but Unwin had a big lead and won easily, Lyders finishing within the time limit. Time, 98 3-ssec. Second semi-final.—-Mattson 1, Young 2. Also started: Kilmister, Blair. _ Making good use of his handicap, Blair was well out in front, but the two backmarkers were soon hard after him end Young, who was riding in second place. Coming out of the south bend in the first lap, Kilmister, who was ahead of Mattson, was leaning over in a tremendous slide when the Auckland rider struck him side on and hurled him to the track. Mattson’s speed was scarcely diminished, and he took the lead in the third lap, going on to win by 120 yards from Young. Time, 87 2-ssec. » Final. Mattson .. 1 Unwin ... .. . • • • •• 2 Young 3 These were the only 'starters. Young opened up a good lead early in the first lap, but Mattson and Unwin were soon hard out after him. Entering the second lap the Auckland rider passed Unwin, and he and Young raced into the south bend almost together, when the latter'crashed. Mattson was thus left to finish with practically no opposition, Unwin being' 150 yards back. Young remounted and finished the race. Time, 88 3-ssec. CHAMPIONS’ SCRATCH RACE. First Heat. —H. Mangham 1, R. Ranby 2. These were the only starters. Mangham took the lead from the start, and it appeared as if he were going to ride away from Ranby. The latter clung to him throughout, however, but, although he challenged strongly on several occasions, the Otago captain, in a good finish, beat him by eight yards. Time, 88 2-ssec. Second Heat. —W. Kilmister 1, P. Day 2. Also started: 8., Unwin. Kilmister led from Day as they entered the first bend, with Unwin last. Day clung well to the Wellington captain throughout, showout to particular advantage on the corners, but Kilmister managed to maintain his lead, and the positions remained unchanged, Kilmister winning by 20 yards. Time, 86 4-ssec. , _ xr Third Heat. —C. Anderson 1, J. Young 2 Also started: A. Mattson. As usual Mattson was in the lead from the start, Anderson being next, and Young last. This was the order until halfway through the third lap, and it appeared as if the Auckland man had the race won when his chain broke. Anderson went on to •win practically unopposed. Young being three-quarters of a lap back. / Time, 84 2-ssec. Final. Kilmister .... 1 Mangham .. ... • • • • 2 Anderson 3 Also started: Day. This was also a great race. Kilmister was out in front from the start, leading from Mangham, with Anderson last. Anderson passed Day in the second lap, and the three leading men then gave a thrilling display of broadsiding. Despite his brilliant cornering Anderson could not catch Mangham, while Kilmister’s position was unassailable, the latter finishing 30 yards to the good, with 10 yards between second and third. Time, Sosec. SECOND DIVISION HANDICAP. First Heat—A. Rait (scr) 1, P. Lyders (3sec) 2. Also started. S. Ravenswood (7sec), J. Gourlay (Bsec). Gourlay’s machine never got going properly, and Ravenswood’s Douglas was also not firing too well. Lyders took the lead in the second lap, and held it till the last, when Rait came with a great burst, and, passing him as they entered the last bend, beat him in a fast finish by 10 yards. Time, 94 2-ssec. „ Second Heat.—L. Homer (7sec) 1, B. Henning (7sec) 2. Also started J. Nisbet scr, A. Inglis 7sec. Inglis’s machine refused to start. Homer took the lead from the start, and had soon’ opened up a big gap between himself and Henning. .Nisbet was gaining on the latter when he came off entering on the third lap, leaving

Homer to ride home from Henning with 150 yards to spare. Time, 102 2-ssec. Third Heat.—A. Apderson (Isec) 1, H. Williams (ssec) .2. These were the only starters. This was hardly a race at all. Anderson passed Williams in the third lap, the latter falling out a little later. However, he changed his mind and continued. Anderson was thus practically riding alone, and he finished in the time of 107 sec, Williams being well back. Final. Homer 1 Lyders 2 Rait 3 Also started; Anderson. At the end of the second lap the order was Homer, Lyders, Anderson and Rait. Openiug the third lap Rait moved up and passed Anderson, who came off as the riders went into the south bend. From this on the order was never changed, although Lyders and Rait challenged strongly, a good finjsh seeing Homer win by two lengths, with Rait five yards further back. Time, 100 l-ssec, LOCAL HANDICAP. L. Homer (4sec) 1, P, Lyders (scr) 2, H. Williams (2sec) 3. Also started: A. Inglis 4sec. Homer took the lead from the start, but in the second lap Lyders moved into second place. Inglis came off on the north bend in the third lap. Homer eventually finished with a lead of 90 yards, Williams being 15 yards further back. Time, 98 4-ssec. BRILLIANT RACING AT CHRISTCHURCH.
