WATERSIDE WORKERS
PREFERENCE TO UNIONISTS. OPERATING IN AUSTRALIA. (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) ADELAIDE, February 21. Preference for members of the Waterside Workers’ Federation operated at Port Adelaide yesterday. The employment of volunteers was restricted to exsoldiers, who are eligible for continuous work. POSITION OF VOLUNTEERS. HUNDREDS AFFECTED. BRISBANE, February 21. Preference to unionist waterside workers came into operation yesterday morning. There is a likelihood of about 700 volunteers being affected. TRANSPORT ACT REGULATIONS. THE SENATE'S INTENTIONS. MELBOURNE, February 21. Immediately the Federal Parliament reassembles the Senate will disallow the regulations under the Transport Act whereby unionists are given preference on the waterfront. SHIPOWNERS PERTURBED. THE. DECISION REGRETTED. LONDON, February 20. Referring to the Australian preference to unionist waterside workers, shipowners regret the High Court’s decision, but say that they must obey the law. They feel that the Government’s attitude will still further damage Australian external credit. The shipowners are greatly perturbed. They regard the volunteers as a safeguard. There has been peace since they were employed.
