THE WEATHER. During the past week the weather has been more seasonable, with an absence of rain, The fruit 'season is at its height, and tomatoes, some four to five weeks later than usual, are now coming in. , DEVELOPMENT COMPANY. ■ The damage to the Cromwell Development Company’s main conduit on the Kawarau River has been repaired, and the pumps are again in, operation. The company is taking the necessary preliminary steps towards a right to lead the water from above the weir by a tunnel, thereby doing away with the race on the rirer face. BOWLING.

The Bannockburn Club is maintaining its reputation. Cromwell recently took the Jolly Cup from Roxburgh but did not survive the first challenge. The game with Bannockburn was played on Tuesday. The latter club was represented by the Central champion rink — J, Parsons, A. Crombie, J. Ritchie and A. Campbell. The challengers were in the lead from the start and eventually won by 20 points to 9. The losers were J, Dennison, D. Nicol, H. Wilkinson and J. Grant. Wanaka and Roxburgh are the next challengers. UNEMPLOYMENT. Under the Government’s No, 5 scheme, 15 to 20 unemployed have been at work in the town. The work is under the direction of the Borough Council, and includes the beautifying of the Kawarau River walk and street formation. A number of men is prepared to undertake prospecting for gold provided Government assistance is offered. Mining a fine opportunity, with experienced men available. The No. 2 subsidy scheme is not giving much employment. PERSONAL. Mr W. J. Blackler, who has occupied the position of clerk of the court, mining registrar, and clerk to the Licensing Committee for some time, with his headquarters at Cromwell, has been promoted to the Gore office. He will be succeeded at Cromwell by Mr F. Stoop, from Queenstown. The change takes place at an early date. EARTHQUAKE RELIEF. ' The local financial effort towards the relief of the sufferers in the earthquake area amounts to £73 13. Of that amount the Borough Council donated £ls, and a bridge evening realised £0 ss, while a splendidly organised street sale of produce by the Women’s Division, New Zealand Farmers’ Union, secured £25. The balance caihe from voluntary subscriptions. The Ladies’ Committee has been doing good work, and two large consignments of goods have gone forward. RACING. While numerous racing clubs, are, under the unfavourable conditions prevailing, considering the abandonment of meetings, the local club does not relish this idea. Nominations for the forthcoming fixture were due last night. A general meeting of the club was held thereafter, when it was decided to carry on, but to extend tbe time for nominations to February 21.
