WAIKOUAITI NOTES.

(From Ouk Own Correspondent.) 5 WAIKOUAITI, February 19. EARTHQUAKE RELIEF. A meeting of the Earthquake Relief Committee was held last night. There was a good attendance. The Mayor (Mr Andrew Pell) reported on the financial results of the canvass of the district. With the help of the County Council and the results of the entertainment to be given on Tuesday evening by members of the Dunedin Orphans’ Club, the total should reach £3OO, figures, said Mr Pell, which the most optimistic among them had not hoped to reach when the canvass started. Great honour was due to the people of the town and district, who . had answered so nobly to the call of distress. At the close of the meeting the members of the Concert Committee met, the first business being to pass a vote of sympathy with Miss Fleet, a member of the com* mittee, who had recently undergone a serious operation. The committee decided to entertain the Dunedin visitors and the canvassers at supper. BOWLING. The Waikouaiti bowling rink which was successful in capturing the Mathieson Trophy has already met one challenger, a team from Seacliff. Waikouaiti eventually won by 22 points to 18. UNEMPLOYMENT. There are 22 men registered as unemployed in the district, and work is being found for some on improvements to the road at Karitane. For others a few jobs under the No. 2 scheme are being offered. DOMAIN BOARD. Before commencing the business of the meeting last Tuesday evening, the chairman of the Waikouaiti Domain Board (Mr Arthur Heckler) proposed a motion of sympathy with the sufferers in the recent earthquake, and a little later the board showed its sympathy in a practical manner by voting a sum of £2O to the Relief Fund,—Mr Cooper report. 1 a washout near Campbell’s bridge. The board decided to repair the damage under the supervision of the Works Committee. The attention of the board having been drawn to the needs of local unemployed men, it was decided to apply to the Unemployment Committee for men to fill in depressions at the children’s playground, and at the Malanaka shelter shed, and also for the planting of mai'ram grass at a suitable time.
