(From Our Own Correspondent.) BALCLUTHA, February 19. Coincident with the advance of 2d per lb in the local price of factory butter, the price of butter-fat has been increased by Id per lb by at least one butter factory doing "business in this district. This company had announced a price of 9d per lb for butter-fat for February, but in keeping with the market price of hutter has now decided to pay lOd for the whole month. RAILWAY VERSUS ROAD.

Local merchants who have been patronising the motor lorries for the transport of goods from Dunedin have been waited on by officials of the Railways Department with a view to diverting the trade back to the railways. The department has materially reduced its freight charges with a view to rendering competition by road impossible. It is said, however, that the lorry owners have also reduced freights in an endeavour to hold the trade. WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED. The Balclutha Borough Council is at present taking full advantage of the No. 5 scheme of the Unemployment Board. Seventeeen men are at present engaged in such works as gorse grubbing, etc., within the borough, and other bodies in the town are also finding employment for a few men. FREEZING WORKS. Since the local freezing works opened on January 20 the total killings have been 55,460 sheep and lambs, an increase of 13.812 compared with last year. Bookings indicate that the works will continue at capacity for some time yet.
