MILTON NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) MILTON, February 19. THE HOSPITAL. There are at present seven patients in the local hospital—two males and five females, . PERSONAL. The installation of Bro. T. M. Scott as right worshipful master of Lodge St. John, Milton, No. 461, S.C., and investiture of his officers for the ensuing term, will be conducted on Saturday evening by District Grand Lodge officers. THE “TALKIES.” The “talkie” films make their first appearance at Milton to-morrow evening. A lease of the Coronation Hall has been granted to Messrs Stone and Strain, of Dunedin, and the requisite plant is now being installed. SALE OF CHEESE. The directors of the Milton Co-opera-tive Dairy Factory Company, Ltd., have disposed of the factory’s output for January and February (approximately 24 tone) at 6d per lb. The sale was effected by the National Mortgage and Agency Company, acting as agents on behalf of a London firm. The price realised is an advance on that obtained for the season’s output up to December 31. SCHOOLS’ SPORTS ABANDONED.

Consequent on the prevalent economic depression, the Otago Secondary Schools’ Association’s, annual sports, which were inaugurated last year, and were fixed for March 13, at Milton, have been abandoned for the current year. The secondary schools concerned in the sports were Roxburgh, Alexandra, Cromwell, Owaka, Tokomairiro, Mosgiel, Palmerston, and Normal (Dunedin). To minimise as much as possible the expenses oF travelling, the teaching staff and committee of the Toko High School have decided that in the meantime, owing to the financial stringency, the pupils shall not participate in sports pastimes against district schools. CRICKET. Milton Club has nominated only one team for the Waiwera Cup competition, which is fixed to commence on Saturday afternoon. By mutual consent the opening match against Milburn has been postponed. A friendly match has been arranged between Milton Club and a team from Hillside Workshops visiting Milton for the picnic on Saturday. Milton will be represented by A. M'Laren, H. Heads, W. Heads, J. Hood, W. Hawke, A. Tyley, E. Olver, H. Hood, J. Ryan, J. Wilson, and W. Arnott. LAWN TENNIS. Milton B team journeys to Clinton on Saturday for the interclub fixture, and will be represented by Miller, Anicich, Grealich, Wilkinson, Misses Clery, S. Vidal, Mrs Densem, Miss 6. Vidal. SCHOOL GROUND IMPROVEMENTS. The Toko District High School Committee has applied, through the Education Board, for permission to top-dress and asphalt portion of the school grounds under the Unemployment Board’s No. 5 scheme. The sum of £SO is to be expended on this work, towards which the Ex-pupils’ Association has promised a donation of £3O to assist in making the school surroundings look their best- for the anticipated influx of visitors at Easter for the seventy-fifth anniversary celebratlonS‘ BOWLING.

The South Otago Association’s interclub matches on Saturday afternoon are as as follow:—Milton v. Balclutha, at Balclutha (five rinks); Benhar v. Stirling, at Stirling; Warepa v. Kaitangata. at Kaitangata; Owaka, a bye. Milton Team—Currie, Groundwater, M'Callum, Devanney; Clark, Moore, Clayton, Wethey; Clery, Robertson, Farrreli, Cuff; Adamson, Moroney, M Donald, Lillicrap; Wilson, Hitchon, Smith, Powley. Six rinks from Milton Club intend participating in the South Otago Association’s tournament on Saturday, February 28 The rinks will be skipped by Messrs A F. Wethey, W. Lillicrap. P. Devanney, J.' Cuff, R. Price, and D. M. Andrews.
