<3>INTERCLUB EIGHTS. OTAGO WINS FIRST HEAT. On account of the fact that a pressure of work on the waterfront at Port Chalmers prevented a number of members of both the Port Chalmers and Queen’s Drive clubs eight oared crews from putting in an appearance at Dunedin last evening, only one heat of the inter-club eight oared championship of Otago was rowed off on the Upper Harbour last evening, the competing crews being Otago and North End. The weather was perfect for rowing, and a large crowd assembled at the end of the Rattray street wharf to witness the contest. At the gun North End (F. Eggere str, J. Mitchell, P. Verngrcen, J. Lyons, W. Titchener, E. Wilson, H. Livingstone and J. Hurrell) got away smartly and showed the way to Otago (F, Brough str, G. M. Johnson, W. Werges, S. Anderson, J. P. Vallis, C. Brown, W. L. Zaffer, and E. W. Pickford) for the first 300 or 400 yards, but near the half way mark Brough went ahead and maintained the advantage to win by two lengths after a good exhibition of rowing, in which he did not appear to be seriously extended. The second heat and the final of the championship will be rowed on Monday evening, weather permitting.
