On arrival at Sydney yesterday of the intercolonial steamer Marama from New Zealand detectives went on board and arrested Edward Louis Schneider, aged 33, on a charge of false pretences at Auckland. The warrant upon which Schneider was arrested was issued by the Auckland police. The charge was that, on December 12, at Auckland, with intent to defraud, he obtained from James O’Neill Hewitt the sum of £IOO by falsely representing that he had a large business and was making huge profite. Schneider appeared later at the Police Court in Sydney and was remanded till February 26, pending the arrival of an escort from New Zealand on Friday next. A Wellington constable will leave for Sydney with the original warrant, and he will ask that Schneider be extradited to Auckland. This morning the Auckland police stated that they had received 18 complaints from persons who alleged they had been defrauded of sums ranging from £6O to £250 by Schneider. The total amount involved is alleged to be over £IOOO. Schneider is an Australian, who recently spent four, or five months in Auckland.
