UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF.
PROMPT PAYMENT. MAYOR’S ASSURANCE TO MEN. A deputation of men working under the Unemployment Board’s No. 6 scheme waited on the City Council last night complaining that though their four days’ work would be. completed to-morrow at noon they had been informed that they would not be paid until Saturday. As soon as the object of the deputation had been explained by Cr Munro, the Mayor (Mr R. S. Black) -stated that he could save time by stating that if (he pay was due on Friday it would be paid. Cr Wilson: It can’t be done. The Mayor: Why not? I shall hear the deputation. The spokesman stated that the timekeeper had informed the men that it would be impossible to pay the money until 10 o’clock on Saturday morning. He represented 150 men, and they considered that the position was unfair. By the time they had been paid and had returned home the shops would be closed, and there would be no opportunity to make purchases until Monday. After being informed that the men were willing to come into town on Friday afternoon the Mayor told them that they could have the money. Cr Munro: Will you take the responsibility ? The Mayor: I will. The town clerk; This Is the first I have heard of the matter.
