DUKE'S BIRTHDAY.

BALL AT WELBECK ABBEY. The famous underground ballroom at Welbeck Abbey, usually known as the “ underground picture gallery,” was the scene of a happy gathering recently on the occasion of the annual household ball in celebration of the Duke of Portland’s seventy-third birthday. The duke has held the title for more than 50 years, a much longer period than any of his predecessors. The famous underground rooms were built by the late duke principally to provide work for the unemployed. The ball was opened by the duke dancing with his housekeeper and the duchess with the house steward, Mr W. C. Clacy. The guests included the tenants and visitors from the adjoining towns of Sheffield, Worksop, Retford, and Mansfield, and all parts of Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and Lincolnshire.
