THE BRISBANE MARU.
ARRIVAL AT' AUCKLAND. XO RESPONSE TO CALL FOR . LABOUR.(Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, February C. There was no response to the call for labour this morning to work the Japanese motor ship Brisbane Maru. which arrived early in the afternoon from Wellington. The vessel was still anchored in the stream this evening, no settlement having been reached. ... Shortly after 9 o'clock this morning the unemployed seamen in Auckland held a demonstration, marching with banners to the place of engagement. A meeting of waterside workers and seamen was addressed by Mr F. P. Walsh, president of the Seamen’s Union, who outlined the dispute. After his address a call was made for labour, but the waterside workers made no response. The seamen then marched from the waterfront to the Labour Bureau, where Mr Walsh addressed the unemployed on the subject of the dispute. A resolution was passed supporting the action taken by the seamen and the waterside workers.
