PRESSURE TESTS

RESEARCH IN BRITAIN. SPECIAL TUNNEL BUILT. (British Official Wireless.) (United Press Association.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) RUGBY, February 5. (Received Feb. 6, at 5.5 p.m.) The National Physical Laboratory at Tedclington has had erected a variable density tunnel for the purpose of research. The construction of the tunnel by Messrs John Brown, of Sheffield, marks a distinct advance in technique to withstand high pressures. The tunnel, which is composed of the largest hollow rolled steel drums in the world, has withstood a test pressure of 550 tons per square inch. High speed aeronautics and land racing already owe many successes to the results ot research in the wind tunnels of the National Physical Laboratory. The chassis and the body of the Blue Bird car, in which Captain Malcolm Campbell is attacking the late Sir Henry Segrave’s land speed record, were subjected to exhaustive tests of this kind. It is anticipated that research in the new tunnel will yield data of great value.
