SWEPT OUT BY TIDE. (Special to Daily Times.) AUCKLAND, January 26. Two boys and a young girl who went to rescue them had a narrow escape from drowning when they were carried down channel by the ebb tide off Hobson Bay. They managed to cling to a rock as they were being swept though the tidal inlet of the railway embankment across Hobson Bay and were rescued by a party headed by Mr S. Walden. The two boys were brothers, George Best (aged nine) and David Best (aged 13), of Newton, while the young girl who attempted to rescue them was Miss Gwen Hanlon, ofArch Hill. KNOCKED DOWN BY MOTOR CAR. (Per United Press Association.) HAMILTON, January 26. The death occurred in Waikato Hospital last evening of a man who is believed to be Herman James Furey (aged 41). a public works employee, of Auckland. . The deceased was knocked down on the Main South road near Huntley on Thursday evening by a car driven by H. E. Barrett, Main Highways Board inspector. The man was severely injured, and- died without regaining consciousness. DROWNED IN SWIMMING POOL. (Per United Press Association.) HAWERA, January 26. The body of William John Turner Nicholson (aged 30), who disappeared in a crowded swimming pool of the river near the Ohawe beach, yesterday, was found about 7 o’clock this morning. The deceased’s son (aged six), who went with him to the pool yesterday afternoon told other bathers after some time that his father, had disappeared, and divers searched the pool unsuccessfully. v The police, who were notified after a delay of several hours, commenced to search in the dark, and resumed draggihg at daybreak this morning, a diver locating the body in 10 feet of water. Nicholson was a dairy company’s employee, and leaves a wife and two children. DEATH FOLLOWING INJURIES. (Per United Press Association.) BLENHEIM, January 26. The death was reported to-day of J. Grimsdale Anderson, of Mahau (PMorous Sound), which followed an accident a week ago when a log rolled on him. It was late before be was found, and he suffered shock and bruises, although no bones were broken. His death was not expected as he appeared to be recovering. He was a prominent settler and took a leading part in Hie New Zealand Farmers’ Union, of which he was .vice-president for some time. FATAL MOTOR COLLISION. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 26. As the result of a collision on the new Waimakariri bridge last evening, George H, Garbuth, a chemist, of Kaiapoi, was killed. A motor cycle, ridden by Garbuth, and a cur driven by Leslie Norman M'lntosh, collided. Garbuth and his motor cycle were dragged a number of yards before the care came to a rest when it collided with a taxi. Garbuth was dead when extricated. No one else was injured, though neither of the cars could be driven away under its own power.
