GOOD TEMPLARY.

There was a splendid attendance at the meeting of the Rescue Lodge No. 105 International Order of Good Templars, which was hold in the Oddfellows’ Hall, King Edward street, on Tuesday. Included among those present were Bro. W. D. Campbell (district deputy of Port Chalmers-Waitati District), Sis. E. Duncan (recently returned from Wellington), and visitors from Star of Freedom' and Hope of Caversham Lodges. Bro. W. A. lies, chief templar, presided. Three friends were proposed for membership and initiated into the lodge. A vote of sympathy and condolence was passed to the Sisters Duff (Star of Freedom Lodge), who had suffered bereavement. Sisters Mrs Cameron and Duncan, who were responsible for the programme, conducted some interesting competitions; the winners for the first competition being Sis. Mrs Kinch 1, Sis. E. Duncan 2, and Bro. Silver 3. In the second competition Bro. W. H. Campbell obtained first prize and Bro. W. A. lies second prize. A meeting of the Beacon Juvenile Temple was held on Saturday. Sister Irene Farquharsori presided over the meeting in the absence of the chief templar. There was a fair attendance of members and a very pleasant e'vening was spent in playing games. Membership medals were presented to Sisters Mary Morren, Sen., Lilian Telfer, and Margory Herum. The superintendent then thanked all who had assisted in getting new members, aqd suggested ways of making the meetings more attractive. 1 The Hope of Caversham Lodge held its regular weekly meeting in the Caversham School gymnasium on Thursday evening. Bro. E. Giles, C.T., presided over a fair attendance of members, and visitors from the Rescue and Star of Freedom Lodges were present. A new member was welcomed into the Order, and after recess an attractive programme, conducted by the young sisters, was carried out until the lodge closed. The weekly meeting of the Hope of Dunedin Lodge, No. 155, 1.0.G.T., was held on Wednesday, January 20, in the Good Templar Hall, Harrop street. O.T. Sister Annie Steedman presided over a good attendance of members, and visitors were present from various lodges in the district. Correspondence was received from the grand secretary. The programme for the evening was old time songs, and a number of members rendered items. A combined choir contest was also held, each choir rendering old-time choruses. After a brief summing up, the judges decided that No. 3 Choir was the winner. The rest of the evening was devoted to games. FORESTERS. The fortnightly meeting of Court Pride of the Leith was held on Wednesday, when there was a large attendance of members, with the C.R., Bro. D. S. Munro, in the chair. A considerable amount of routine business was transacted, and one new member was admitted. The last half-yearly and yearly balance sheets were read by Auditor Bro. W. J. Duncan, and Auditor Bro. R. S. Vercoe also reported on the audit. The court was shown to be in a healthy condition, both numerically and financially. The membership had increased during last year by 32, making the total, after purging the roll, 932. Sick allowances to the extent of £773 Os lOd were dispensed to members last year, and £llO paid out for funeral allowances. The medical charges ran into close on £IOOO. The auditors drew the attention of members to the liberal donations to distressed members from the Benevolent Fund. The secretary traversed the balance sheets, and fully explained the position of the various funds, and the treasurer also spoke on the matter. The auditors were thanked for their services, and the balance sheets were adopted. During last year 61 new members were admitted, and the court lost three by death and, 26 dropped out through non-payment of dues, a matter which is greatly regretted. There was a large attendance at the meeting of Court St. Andrew’s, held on Monday last. The sick visitors reported that two members had met with serious accidents, and that as a result of a motor cycle accident the court had lost by death the late Bro. T. Swell. Motions of sympathy were accorded to the members, also to the relatives of the late Bro. Swell, members standing in silence. Invitation to Ccffirt Excelsior to attend its fifty-fourth anniversary was accepted. P.C.R. Bro. T. Pitts was nominated as a judge for the forthcoming efficiency competition. The C.R. extended a welcome to P.C-.R, Bro. S. Brettell, who responded on behalf .of Court Enterprise, and invited the members to its' meeting on January 27. One new member was admitted, and a committee was appointed to arrange for the carrying out of the fifty-sixth anniversary celebrations next month. The fortnightly meeting of Court Pride of Gore was held in the bandroom, Main street, Gore, on January 8, when C.R. Bro. Ferguson, presided over a fair gathering of members. One member was reported on the sick fund. The court decided to hold the initiation ceremony competition on February 11, when all courts in’ Southland would,take part. Three new members were admitted, and the meeting closed with dancing.
