POPULAR TAIERI TEACHER.

FAREWELL TO MR MILLER. On Friday evening a successful function was held at Allanton when a farewell social was given to Mr and Mrs L. W. A. Miller, who are about to leave to take up their residence at Miller’s Flat, where Mr Miller has been appointed headmaster. Mr James Walker presided over an enthusiastic gathering of local friends of the departing guests, whilst several friends from Mosgiel, Momona, Otokia, and Henley were also present. Eulogistic speeches were made by Messrs James Walker, George Stevenson, and James Beleski. During the four years Mr Miller had been head teacher in the Allanton School much good work had been accomplished by him. He had been a most capable and efficient teacher. All his Standard VI pupils had passed, whilst great improvements had been effected in the school environments. For six years he had taken a keen interest in school sport activities on the Taieri Plain, and as 1 the secretary of the Taieri School Sports Association had contributed in no small measure to the success which had always attended the association’s annual fixtures. Mr Miller had also played a prominent part in local affairs. His extensive musical gifts had been freely and willingly used in the service of the community, and as secretary of the Allanton Hall Committee of Management he had rendered yeoman service. Mr Walker on behalf of those present presented Mr and Mrs Miller with a Mosgiel travelling rug and a case of cutlery, at the same time voicing the community’s best wishes for their future prosperity and happiness in Miller’s Flat. Mr Miller suitably responded. Prior to the making of the presentation an enjoyable programme of vocal and elocutionary items was rendered by Misses Melville and Matheson (songs), Mrs R. H. Ralston (recitations), •and Messrs C. Williams, A. Roxburgh, L. Miller, and L. Cleary (songs). After, supper an enjoyable dance was held. The music was supplied by Mr and Mrs W. Barron and J. MWhinney, of Momona. The singing of “ Auld Lang Sync ” at 3 a.m. brought a most successful function to a fitting close.
