RIFLE SHOOTING.

TIMARU DEFENCE CLUB. W. E. JONES WINS THE GABITIES CUP. On Saturday afternoon the Timaru Defence Rifle Club held its twelfth weekly shoot on the club range. The day was fine, with a stiff wind off the sea. The attendance was much smaller than usual owing to the harvest having started; There were only 31 riflemen present, but some very good shooting was registered. The ranges for the day were seven shots at 300yds. 500yds, and 600yds. The big attraction for the day was the late Colonel Gabities Cup, which was to go to the rifleman with the highest score off the rifle. This was won by Vice-president W. E. Jones with the very fine score of 99 off the rifle, with Rifleman G. Carmichael second with another fine shoot” of 96. Jones’s score was the highest put on for the season. He came back to 600yds with 67 out of 70. He started at 600yds with two 4’s for sighters. Throwing them out he then got a 3 for first business, but got the bull’s-eye with his second shot, and kept there till the fifth shot. He now required two bulls to make his century, but he was unfortunate in getting a 4 for his sixth shot, and finished with a bull, making him 99. His boards read at 300yds, 4555445, 32; 500yds 5555555, 35; 600yds, 3555545, 32; total 99. There were some others who did some very good shooting at 500yds. They were G. Carmichael’s! Board 5545555. 34; W. Bradshaw, 5555545. 34; H. Hopkins, 5655455, 34. The trophy for the day was won bv Vice-president W. E. Jones with 100, Rifleman C. Mathieson was second with 99, and Rifleman P. Fodan third with 97. Rifleman C. Mathieson is only a boy, and his shoot was a magnificent one. He was going for 34 at 600yds. He required a bull for his last shot to win the match by two points, but the strain seemed rather much for him, and he got an outer, losing the match by one point. Vice-president W. E.
