AN UNDISCHARGED BANKRUPT

CHARGE OF OBTAINING CREDIT FOUR M9NTHS’ IMPRISONMENT. (Per United Press Association.) PALMERSTON N., January 26. Walter John Ladd, of Ruakura, Hamilton, was sentenced in the Palmerston North Magistrate's Court by Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., to one month’s imprisonment on each of four charges, the sentences to be cumulative, of obtaining credit without disclosing that he was an undischarged bankrupt. The charges were that he obtained £25 credit from Ronald Arthur Beckett, of Linton, £34 from Levin and Co,, £9l from Sydney George Northey (Palmerston North) and £37 from Holbcn Hubbard, Ltd., all between January, 1927, and May, 1930. Northey had been his friend and also guaranteed his credit in the bank to the extent of £l3O. Ladd had gone bankrupt in Dannevirko as a milk vendor in 1921, and 18 months later applied for his discharge, but received no reply, except being told to apply later. He had taken a lease of a farm at Sandou in 1920, and lost everything, together with £750 his mother had lent him. Subsequently he left for Waikato, but only obtained temporary work. The magistrate said the circumstances did not warrant probation, as the debts went back to 1927. He saw no reason why the accused should escape imprisonment.
