CITY POLICE COURT.
Saturday., January 24. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) INTOXICATED MOTORIST. Stated by Senior Sergeant Quartemain to have been found lying near the gate of the Anderson’s Bay Cemetery in a state of intoxication with his motor cycle alongside him, Robert Julius Olsen was charged with being drunk whilst in charge of a motor cycle.—The senior sergeant said that the accused, when found, had two bottles of beer and a bottle of whisky in hie pocket, and, when, an hour later in the police station an attempt was made to waken him, it was found almost impossible to rouse him. He had been involved in a motor accident about a fortnight previously. The accused’s version of the affair was that he thought he had been struck by a car and must have received a knock on the head. He had had only four drinks, and the liquor found in his possession did not belong to him. He was merely taking it to Tomahawk for a friend.—His Worship refused to believe the explanation, and fined the accused £5, cancelled his license and prohibited him from driving for 12 months after the date of expiration of the cancelled license. PROBATIONER SENT TO GAOL. Henry Barrett pleaded guilty to having stolen a handbag and 7s 6d in money, the property of Rachael Smith.—Chief Detective Cameron stated that the accused had gone to a private hotel in the city and had there entered the room of the complainant and stolen the handbag and its contents. He then took the bag to the lavatory, where he extracted the money and several small articles it contained and dropped tne bag into the cistern. The accused, who was already on probation, had a long list of previous convictions for theft and false pretences, and on his periodical visits to town, he appeared to become quite incorrigible.— Barrett’s plea was that he was under the influence of drink when he committed the theft arid did not know what he was doing.—The magistrate said it was futile to give him any further chance, and sentenced him to a month’s imprisonment.
