(Pek United Press Association.) HAMILTON January 23. Bernard Smyth was fined £35 for the illicit sale of liquor at Franktou. When the premises were raided by the police a large quantity of liquor was found. WELLINGTON, January 23. Found bookmaking on the Trentham racecourse in a small way yesterday, John Walter Johnston wae fined £lO to-day at Wellington. ASHBURTON, January 23. Leo Laffcy was fined £2O for selling liquor without a license. He was agent for an outside hotel, and the police evidence was to the effect that he supplied liquor that had not previously been ordered by a purchaser. About 250 bottles of liquor seized during the raid were ordered to be confiscated. Arising out of a recent prosecution for sly-grog selling, Ernest Frederick Ward, hotelkeeper, of Methven. was charged today with having sold liquor in a place other than licensed premises. The facts were that when the police raided the premises of the roan acting as the Ashburton agent for Ward they found liquor that bore no labels giving the names of the purchasers. The magistrate, in imposing a fine of £lO, said that, although the licensee was keeping within the letter of the law, he was really carrying on business outside his district.
