In art, Moses is conventionally represented with horns owing to a mistake in the translation of the Bible. Exodus, xxxiv, 30, reads: “And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of bis face shone." The Hebrew word for "shining” may be translated either “ sent forth beams ” or “ sent forth horns.” The Vulgate accepted tlie latter. The early painters therefore represented Moses with horns.
