CHRISTCHURCH NOTES.

(Special to Dailt Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, January 22. Horses which will be bracketed on the machine at New Brighton to-day include Location and Dollar King in the Shirley Handicap: Author Franz and Baron Bingen ip the Waimairi Handicap; Radley and Lola Bingen, Achray and Ambleside, and Dusolina and Donard in the Summer Handicap; Baron Bingen and Dundas Boy in the Beach Hadicap; and Royal Comrade and Kreisler and Tactless and Great Triumph in the Farewell Handicap. _Blue Glen, a grey mare trained by G. Caddy at New Brighton, was warmly supported to win at the recent Greymoulh meeting, but she let her supporters down badly. She is engaged twice at New Brighton to-morrow, and she will again have’a number of admirers. At the Timaru meeting, held earlier in the month, Jessie Huon, trained by R. Townley, ran two sterling races, and at Wellington on, Saturday she registered a fair performance in the Improvers’ Handicap. At New Brighton to-morrow she will race in the Summer Handicap, in which her chances- cannot be ignored. Worthy King, now trained by A. Davey, is a four-year-old gelding by Travis Axworthy from a King Cole mare, and in several races he has shown himself possessed of great speed. He has not always been well handled in his races, but with a good reinsman up to-morrow he may take a power of beating in the Shirley Handicap of a mile and a-half. At a meeting of the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association this week reference was made to the early' closing of nominations and acceptances for the Greymouth summer meeting and to .the early closing of nominations for the Forbury Park meeting, and it was decided to approach both clubs with a view to having different arrangements made. It seems that owners and trainers THE NEW BRIGHTON MEETING, have a just grievance, for, with the Greymouth' meeting, which was held on January 5 and 6,. nominations were taken as early as December 10 and acceptances were declared on December 22. The Wellington Trotting Club sets an example in this respect, and for its meeting held on January l 7 nominations were taken on January 2, handicaps were declared four days later, and acceptances closed on January 14. _ The opening event will be the Innovation Handicap, and in an open’race Pattie Bingen, Fair Exchange, and Guy Carbine may prove the best. 'Oxford Queen won so well at Timaru that her prospects in the Shirley Handicap must be considered seriously, and this time Lydia Pointer will be off the limit, and will be afforded, every chance. Achray has been working well. Worthy King is speedy, but does not stay, and of the handicapped horses Blue Glen, Russell Pointer, and White Stranger should ■do best; White Stranger, Lydia Pointer, and Worthy King should fill the places. A more open race than the Waimiari Handicap it would be hard to find, and, though Colonial Boy is a hot favourite, he will probably find a grass track strange to him, and hie form may not be true. Milo Mihto raced well at Greymouth and Ashburton, and he will be one of the hardest to beat. Great. Author, though beaten into third, place at Wellington on Saturday, is a better horse than this running suggests, and he will not be . troubled by the going,’ El Direct has a sporting chance, and Playwave may improve on last Saturday’s form. A good race should find Great Author, Milo Minto, and Playwave handy at the finish. In the Summer Handicap J. N, Clarke has Madam Locanda engaged, and at her best she is more than useful. Lydia Pointer is also engaged with bright prospects of success, and G. M'Kendry’s pair, Arribleside and Achray, and Blue Glen will carry support. Stowaway, on 24, yards behind, is above the average, and Jessie Huon’s recent racing points to her going well. Jessie Huon, Stowaway, and Lydia Pointer should finish in the money. The Avon Handicap provides a chance for the sprinters, and a mile should suit Denver City, a quick beginner. St. George and Kate Logan should* prove the best ( of the remainder. In the New Brighton Handicap Repeta Mac is likely to he one of the favouriteß on the machine, and Eileen Wood’s Wellington running suggests her as a possibility. Merce Bingen is an unknown quantity on Canterbury courses, but she is reported to be a good mare. Eileen Wood, Repeta Mac, and Merce Bingen should do well. Hostess ‘seems to be the outstanding performer in the Beach Handicap, and in the event, of her defeat Tenedos and Baynut should take a hand. Cranleigh is likely to be - a warm favourite in the Farewell Handicap, and be is likely to see a short price. The Royal Cbmrade-Kreisler bracket will be fancied, and, well handled. Loco will keep the whole field busy.
