By Sektinel. Nominations for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s Cup meeting are due on Monday. Ballance is certain to be fancied in the Wairio Cup to-day. Some of the horses engaged may find the distance beyond them. i- Horses from South Island stables won >. five of the races at Trentham on Thurs- ' day, and the "three place-getters in the Metropolitan Handicap—Compensation, Meadow Lark, and Palermo —are all ■ ‘ trained south of the Waitaki. Ball Dress, the Douro Cup winner, raced well at the Wairarapa meeting, winning two events, while just previously she . scored at Ashburton, making three suc- . cesses on end. She was not very well supported in the Apprentices’ Plate at Trentham, but put in a good effort in the straight to get second. She is a halfsister to Centerpiece and Full Feather, and is by the dual Derby winner, Winning Hit.. She could have been purchased for 200gns prior to her success at Ashburton, , but much more would be required now. ,r When Gay Cockade finished close up third to Corinax and Lucy Rose in the Grand Stand Handicap, one mile and a..quarter, on the concluding day of the Auckland summer meeting, he registered a solid performance. He carried 7.2 on that occasion, and, handicapped at the same weight in the Takapuna Cup, he must be given a good chance. In this event Gay Cockade meets Gorin ax on 91b better terms and has an advantage of 41b over Lucy .. Rose, and at the difference he is likely to account for both of-them. The Takapuna Cup candidate Eager Rose has been responsible for several good track gallops recently, and her effort • Cover, a round on the No. 1 grass last , iSatueday morning was very impressive (says the Star). At the Takapuna spring .meeting Eager Rose carried 7.8, and ran second to Sargon in the Alison Cup, and finished third t 0... Royal Boulton and Mosque in the St. Andrew’s Handicap at the same meeting with 8.0 on her back. -Since then, at the Auckland summer meeting, she scored art easy win in the Christmas Handicap, one mile, and, handicapped at 7.9 in the Takapuna, Cup,_ her prospects are sure to appeal. It is doubtful • if A. Kemp’s mare was ever better than she is at the present stage, and she can be relied on to put up a bold showing in the big event at North Shore. The Wingatui hoise, Dumblane, was very unlucky in the Mungaroa Handicap, liis first effort at Trentham. He was badly bumped in the first furlong,, losing half a dozen lengths. But for this mishap he might have won comfortably; The West Coast gelding, Killigrew, ran a solid race in the Douro Cup. He was one of the front division oyer the last half-mile, and’ he. stayed on, well to beat all but the, winner. He should get a stake very soon. v True Shaft, after being -neglected in the betting on the first day,. was a strong second favourite in the Camp Handicap. He jumped out smartly, and was in front practically all the way. It was an impressive performance under a big weight, and was his best- effort. in the Dominion, though he raced well in Australia last season. He. will win good open events later. Jaloux broke a long succession of de-. feats when he won the Trial Plate at Trentham. In some of His races, he had performed with great credit, having been placed in good company more than once, ,- and he was backed here; with great confidence. He was at the fail of the field for half the distance, but he put in a fine run over the" final' stages. Having broken the ice he may go on to more important successes. The Wingatui three-year-old. Compensation, ran a great race in the Metropolitan Handicap. He was in the--, picture all the way, and he finished, with great dash. Had he come home as straight on the first day he would have been in the money in the Telegraph Handicap. The Waimate gelding. Mount Boa, had been racing very solidly this season, and he registered another fine performance in the January Handicap. He was unlucky at the start, but he was one of the leaders in the straight and only failed in the last 50 yards.
