AMATEUR ATHLETICS.

SUCCESSFUL EVENING MEETING. The first open meeting of the year was held by the Otago Centre, New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, on the Caledonian Ground last evening. Between 500 and GOO people were present, and keen interest was taken in the seven events which figured on the programme. The meeting was the most successful held by the centre this season, and some outstanding performances were placed on record. The meeting marked the first appearance of important racing of a number of the championship runners. The track was on the soft side. There was a light south-west breeze, but it did not affect the runners and cycle riders to any great extent. A feature of the meeting was the remarkable riding of J. Fogarty, who broke his own record twice in the half-mile cycle event. Another femarkable performance was given by J. G. Barnes in the one-mile flat race. He ran a splendid race, and his performance was all the more brilliant when the soft track and drizzing rain were taken into consideration. He made a great effort in the final stages of the race, and when he forged to the front he was greeted with cheers by the spectators. Barnes registered very fast time. Messrs H. T. Emmcrson, P. W.
