QUEENSTOWN NOTES. (From Our Own Correspondent.) QUEENSTOWN, December 28. BOWLING. The usual week of bowling of the Christmas. and New Year period commenced on Christmas Day. As of yore, bowlers have come to Queenstown from all parts of Southland and Otago in order to take part in the various tournaments. There are several absentees this year, due largely to sickness, death, or other causes, but the ranks are filled up with newcomers. Despite counter attractions in other centres, it says a lot for the sport, together with the unparalleled charm of the Domain and bowling green, that so many of the best players and their lady , folk visit Queenstown every year. ; The green is indeed the happy meeting place or bowlers and their friends from all parts, when the very best relations exist both on and off the green. On Christmas day the weather was somewhat unsettled, and evening play was broken owing to heavy rain showers. However, Boxing Day was fine, and also Saturday, the heat being almost tropical. The organisation of the matches was again in the capable hands , of Mr J. Rennie, of Dunedin, who retains the complete confidence and esteem of all visiting bowlers. OTAGO v. SOUTHLAND. GARDINER CUP COMPETITION. The second annual competition for the silver cup presented by Mr J. W. Gardiner took place on the Queenstown creem on Saturday afternoon last. Ideal summer, weather prevailed, and an almost tropical heat was tempered by a light wnid which blew across the green, which at the same time made the play somewhat tricky. Seven rinks took part in a 25head eomptition. When half the game had been played the board showed a big £ ar f gm “ f avour of Otago. Southland, made a wonderful recovery, and at the end of the game was only -13 down on the aggregate total. PRESENTATION OF CUP. In handing over the cup, Mr W J Roger, president of the Wakatipu Bowling Club, congratulated the Otago representatives'on winning the trophy for the second time. Although Southland did not win, they improved their position (the margin between the teams last year was .38), they hoped to carry off the honour nest year. He was pleased to say that the game was played in the same admirable spirit that ahvays characterises the sport of bowling. 1 in accepting'the cup on behalf of the Otago teams, congratulated tue Southland rinks on the great recovery they _ made in the latter stages of the '"atoll. _He concurred with the remarks of Mr Roger on the fine spirit that prevailed in all the matches that had taken place over the holiday season. If this feeling did not exist, he would hot be found taking the same interest in the arrangements. Mr Rennie thanked Mr Gardiner, the donor of the cup, which, he stated, had invested the game with a "ood deal more interest as between the "two provinces.

Cheers were then given for Mr Rennie and for the respective sides. A doubles match is being arranged for Mmulay. In this match ladies will act as skips, and they will choose their own leads.
