as well as in the trees, that it fed on berries and insects, and that it had a piping voice. Its first name was "the cinerous wattle-bird,” referring to its orange and blue wattles and dark bluish-grey costume. It is present on Stewart Island, and latest reports state that it is plentiful in some largo forested areas in the South Island. It has a weakness for the leaves of the kararnu and of the sow thistle and other herbs, also the leaves of trees and ferns. In both the North Island and the South Island, and the Clmthams, there lived a crow that was extinct before Europeans came here. Its bones show’ that on the Chathams it was fairly plentiful. It has been named Palaiocorax, the ancient crow. .
