present under a cloud (reports an exchange), and his preparation for the Great A orthern Trotting Derby has been intertered with at an unfortunate time. Worthy Chief was making excellent progress just before the recent meeting, and so well did he perform in a work-out with several older Pacers that his connections were gaining confidence in his Derby prospects. He worked a mile in 2min 16sec, running the last half in Imin 7seo, which was a striking performance. As he was finishing on well, A. J. Julian expressed the opinion that the three-year-old would be ready for j .December classic and he felt confident that he would make a good showing, in spite of the strength of the opposition. Worthy Chief was showing far more promise at this stage than Roife Audubon did two years ago, when Juian went close to effecting a surprise in Wrackler’s Derby. However, Worthy Chief contracted a cold, which has left ill-effects and necessitated a cessation of training operations. Julian still has Worthy Cause, a brother to Roife Audubon, engaged in the classic, but while he has been making good progress he lacks racing experience, and cannot be held to have much chance with Arethusa, Red Shadow, Rawhitiroa, and Chenaway. _ As far as Auckland's chance of success in the Derby is concerned, • the onus will be on Kewpie’s Triumph, but while he will make a bold display, there will not be many followers of form supporting him against the crack southern three-year-olds.

NOTES ON THE RACING. (Fuosi Our Special Reporter.) AUCKLAND, December 1. After showers this morning the weather was fine for the conclusion of the Takapuna Jockey Club’s spring meeting today. The racing was again good, and two first day winners in White Wings and Chief Jewel were again successful. There was a lengthy inquiry into the running of Ammon Ra, who finished second in the Rakino Handicap, and the trainer, J. T. Jamieson, was censured for not giving his rider more definite instructions. The jockey, E. Ludlow, was also censured for not riding Ammon Ra more vigorously. Karangapai was installed a solid favourite over Operatic for the Vauxhall Handi, cap, and he duly scored, although he just got up at the finish to beat a big outsider in Merry Lu, who attempted to win from end to end. Valmarie, always up bandy to the leader, was a close third, and Good Idea was fourth. The next to finish were
