Phenomenal catches of rainbow and brown trout are reported from Lake Potoroa near Murchison. This lake, which is about 12 miles long, is set in some of the most beautiful scenery in the South Island, and the residents of the district are confident that it will become the Taupo of the South Island. Half a dozen of the fish were brought to Wellington recently by Mr P. Mookett, of Murchison. They ranged from 81b to 12lb, and all were in excellent condition. Mr Mockett said that up to recently anglers had ignored the lake, but those who-had tried their hand had voted it a fisherman's paradise. During the week-end four men, three of whom were novicee, caught 48 tr °. U m mostly rainbow . with the -minnow and Taupo spoon, and the fish ranged from 41b to 101 b, Nine trout, some of -which were as big as I4lb, were caught by another angler, and still another hauled in 14.
