RELIEF RATES OF PAY. COUNTY COUNCIL’S PROTEST. (Per United Press Association.) ASHBURTON, November 29. The Ashburton County Council is asking the Counties’ Association emphatically to protest against the fixing of 14s a day as the rate of wages on relief works. The council contends that the rate will result in ■ many farm labourers leaving their present positions, and it will be difficult for farmers, to obtain labour at lower wagps since they will be unable to pay more owing to the present financial stringency. If wages are paid on unproductive or uneconomic work the position will tend to become chaotic. Even if the work is only temporary it will fix a standard ot wages which will be difficult to reduce.
