SANDERS CUP TRIALS.

EILEEN WINS THIRD RACE. In a.light and fluky south-east wind, the Jellicoe class boat Eileen won the third Sanders Cup trial race, which was sailed over a triangular course on the Upper Harbour on Saturday afternoon. The wind was fairly fresh. and steady when the five boats were sent away at 3 p-m., but it gradually fell lighter, and eventually dropped altogether. The boats were left in a flat calm when they had about a mile of the course to cover to reach the finishing line. Mavis lay as though she were at anchor under the Peninsula shore, Heather lay for some time near the Anderson Bay mark, Winifred and Squib lay side by side with empty sails in mid stream, while Eileen, with a lead of over half a mile, moved slowly towards the Kitchener street mark. She eventually rounded the mark and drifted to the line with-the ebb tide, beating Squib and Winifred by about 15 minutes. It was a very unsatisfactory race, and could not be classed as a test of a skipper’s ability. The course was from .a line off the Victoria wharf to Castle Beacon, then to a mark off Vauxhall, thence to a pile off the Kitchener street wharf, and back to the starting line, the course being covered twice. Spinnakers were set after the five boats were sent away, but the big balloons were soon dispensed with. Heather led to the Castle Beacon, whjeh she rounded 17 seconds in the lead of Squib. . When sheets were flattened M'Culloch set the. leader on Heather, but it was doused some minutes later. Eileen sailed very fast after she came on the wind, and held third position off Waverley, Squib was doing good windward work, and she passed to weather of Heather when abreast of the wharves. Eileen gained very fast, and Hunter sailed his boat tack for tack with Squib. Mavis was a long way astern, and when the four leading boats crossed on opposite tacks near Waverley Eileen passed to windward, and soon opened up a big lead. When Eileen rounded the Am derson Bay mark she led Winifred by 37 seconds and Squib by 56 seconds. Winifred and Squib were in close company on the run to the Kitchener street wharf mark. Eileen commenced the second round with a lead of about 35 seconds from Winifred. The wind was spilled from .Heather’s sails after she rounded the wharf mark, and she fell a long way astern of the leading boats. Eileen drew further away from Winifred and Squib on the lead to the Castle Beacon, and when she came on the wind she had a lead of one and a-half minutes. She sailed very fast under a light breeze on a long leg along the Peninsula and rounded the Anderson Bay mark with a lead of 4min 20sec from Winifred and over smin from Squib. It was at this stage that the wind f* 11 right away, and the race ended in a drifting match. CANTERBURY TRIALS. FIRST RACE TO COLLEEN. (Pee United Pbess Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 29. In a fresh north-east breeze, at Lyttelton this afternoon Colleen, twice Canterbury representative in the Sanders Cup races, had a decisive win in the first trial race to select the Canterbury boat for this season’s races. The other boats were Irene and Usher, which finished in that order, one being three minutes, the other eight minutes behind Colleen,
