The musical comedy, “ Our Migs Gibbs/' opened its season at the Opera House last night under _ very happy circumstances, for the audience was enthusiastic, . and the production was bright and melodious, and provided delightful, entertainment. One could not but vote It one of th e best productions that has ever graced an Oamaru stage, and the performers’ musical director (Mr G M. Whale) and producer (Mr 8.. Syverston) must be congratulated on the exceedingly high standard achieved. The show went with a merry swing from start to finish, and was so full of enjoyment that the finale appeared only too soon, and seemed to terminate rather abruptly. From a spectacular point of view the scenery and costuming were excellent, whilst the frocks of the manikin' parade, which made quite, a feature, were exquisite. In the title role of “Miss Gibbs/' Mrs Veda Burt acted charmingly, and sang her numbers with, excellent, effect. The manner ip which she sustained the part was nothing short of an achievement, in view of the short notice at which she undertook the role, on account of Miss Tm Salt’s indisposition. The presentation of a beautiful bouquet to Mrs Burt was a gracious tribute from Miss Salt Mr Graham Dickel, as Hughie Pierrepont. and Mr B. Syverston, as Timothy Gibbs, shared the honours in comedy, and kept the audience in a state of merriment throughout. Mr Linton Hodge was in fine voice, and portrayed the part of Lord Eynsford effectively, and Miss Edna Fraser was a decided success .as Lady Betty. Mrs Laura M'Dowell made the most of hei lines as the Duchess of Minster, and Miss Olive Bennett was charmingly Parisian in the role of Madame Jeanne. Mr Stan Hook was Toplady* manager of Garrod’s Store, to the life, and Miss Nancy Dexter acquitted herself with great credit in her first role as Lottie Farquhar, a lady of fashion. The minor parts were all well sustained by Miss Ena Crawshaw (Miss Beauderc), Mr M. Stewart (Ultimax), Miss Doris Taylor (Lady Gwen), Mr Charles Rowe (Muggs), Mr L. Frame (Slithers), Mr Allan Young (Beavis). Mr T. J. Banks (Amalfy), and Mr Eric Brown (Earl of St, Ives). The concerted items were more than pleasing, the choruses being nicely balanced and the popular tuneful numbers sung with expression and taste. The ballets too, were delightful. Miss Doris Harper scoring a big success in the pas de seul. Altogether “ Our Miss Gibbs ’ is a pronounced success, and should not be missed on any account.
