DUNEDIN FRENCH CLUB.

“ THE BARBER OF SEVILLE.” Who does not know the “Barber of Seville,” that crafty, joyous fellow, created by the fertile mind of Beaumarchais at that period of the eighteenth century when theatrical performances of the comedy type were in high favour in France and the public mind was more or less becoming acquainted with literature a work of the nature of “Le . Barber de Seville ” would be very acceptable to the average mind of an uneducated- audience, as it painted .ofie' of the worst of human failings—greed—in its most true and unattractive colours. An old man desirous of marrying a young/and lovely debutante for her money. How that French mob‘of the eighteenth century must have howled with’delight at its ending, the young and handsome lover, Almavira, with the aid of the old pretender, that joyous. rogue, Figaro, the famous barber defeats all the carefully-laid plans and marries the lovely Rosina before the old man’s nose. It is this great favourite and universallyknown comedy which Mons. Paul Saldaigne is producing on Wednesday, October 22, at Allan Hall, Otago University. Most original and fresh are the seven-teenth-century costumes which have been designed by the producer. A special setting has been painted for the occasion.
