The Leader of the Opposition (Mr J. G. Coates) left Auckland by tram last evening (says our special correspondent) to take part in the final stages of the Waipawa by-election. He Was accompanied by Mrs Coates. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report the receipt of cabled advice from their head office, London, announcing the resignation through ill-health of the Hon. Sir Arthur Lawley from their directorate.* Sir Arthur’s 'resignation after his long service on the board has been accepted with much regret. Mrs C. Stewart, of Sawyers’ Bay, whose funeral took place yesterday, was well known at Port Chalmers before the war as hostess of Chick’s Hotel. Her husband, Mr Charles Stewart, was for many years, prior to taking ui> hotelkeeping, a well-known carpenter in the Union Steam Ship Company’s intercolonial fleet. At the close of the business meeting on Saturday last of the North Taieri Expupils’ Association a pleasant little ceremony occurred in the course of the afternoon tea._ Mr M*Kinnon (of the staff of the Mosgiel High School), who had compiled the jubilee _ booklet for the North Taieri School jubilee, was presented with a smoker’s outfit in recognition of the labours 'he had spent in writing up the souvenir. Complimentary reference had been made during the celebrations to the booklet and the information it contained. Mr' Charles Findlay made the presentation,, which was duly-acknowledged by Mr M'Kinnon.
