THE POPE’S SMOKE.
“ PRIVATION ” OF ABSTENTION. In the course of an audience which he granted lately to 150 leaders of the “ Young Catholic Movement,” the Pope expressed his gratitude for a gift of money derived from a “ day without cigarettes ” on the part of its members. “ In our fathers’ time,” said the Pope, smiling—for he appreciates a good cigar himself —“ the extent of such privation would hardly have been understood. But nowadays, when so many cigars and cigarettes arc smoked throughout the world, we thoroughly realise the generous idea underlying this ‘smokeless day.’ ” The Pope then imparted the apostolic benediction to his youthful visitors.
