NORTH-EAST HARBOUR NOTES

SPRING FLOWER SHOW. .i, A T? p 1 r j? K J°,7 er be held in the Public Hall at Macaudfew Bay this afternoon. At a meeting of the committee. 0 *) Tuesday night, Mr Strathbrn reP°|jted that entries were coming in freely, and that the committee had every reason to anticipate an excellent display. Although the season has been a backward one, exhibitors are doing their best to ma k® the show a success. He impressed on the meeting the necessity of securing the co-operation of the residents in the district to make the effort a financial suecess. As this will be the first flower show held in the district it should prove valuable from an educational point of view to all lovers of flowers, as the locality is well adapted for horticulture. BEACH ROAD ACCIDENT.

.Sympathy is expressed with the victims of the accident which occurred on the Beach road on Thursday night. The injured persons are well-known and respected m the district. The accident occurred about half a mile from Broad Bay on the city side. , 3

BOATING CLUB SQUABBLE. Some consternation was caused at Macandrew Bay last Sunday nigHt by the arrival of four city members of the NorthEast Harbour Boating Club with a trailer attached to a motor car. Their visit was apparently for the purpose of removing two rowing skiffs from the boatshed. B is stated that it has always been the objective of a few of the city members of the Boating Club to deprive the Macandrew Bay Rowing Club of the use of the shed, and a climax was reached with the advent of this party. Some of the’Macandrew Bay members had been advised of the intended seizure, and they prevented the removal of the boats. At the annual meeting of the Boating Club, held last Monday night, strong exception was taken to the action of the four members, and a motion to expel them was narrowly defeated, as it required a two-thirds’ majority to carry such a resolution. However, the meeting elected officers and committeemen from Macandrew Bay residents, and there is now a feeling that the affairs of the Boating Club are once again firmly established in the hands of a local committee.

GOLDEN WEDDING,

A very pleasant function took place in the Macandrew Bay. Public Hall on Monday evening, the occasion being the golden wedding of two respected and popular residents—Mr and Mrs W. N. Riddell. The hall was tastefully decorated for the occasion, and about 40 friends were present at the breakfast tables. , A pleasing feature was the presence of the bridesmaid (Miss J. J. Squires), who had come from Auckland to do honour to Mr and Mrs Riddell. The couple were married in Knox Church, 'Dunedin, by the Rev. Dr Stuart, and the greater part of their married life has been spent in Dunedin. There were three sons and three daughters of the marriage, and all but two sons were present at tne ceremony. Mr John Riddell, one of the sons, was kiljed in France during, the war, and James, who is a resident of Sydney, was at the last minute unable to mqke the trip to New Zealand. The Rev. Mr Macarthur was chairman, and the toast list was as follows;—“ Bride and Bridegroom” (the Rev. Mr Macarthur); " Bridesmaid ” (Mr T. Irvine); “ Family " (Mr T. Dawson); ” Grandchildren " (Mr A. Speirs); “ Absent Friends” (Mr W. H, Riddell), and “The Chairman” (Mr W, H. Riddell). The couple received a- sheaf of con-, gratulatory telegrams and many presents. After the ceremony dancing was indulged in, and the singing of “ Aula Lang Syne ” brought a very happy evening to a close.

Correspondence was received from the Dunedin City Council' in reference to the alteration of the street lights at Stott’s road. The town clerk stated that the removal of the light to another position would not overcome the difficulty, but it was suggested that another light be installed.—The committee agreed that the Peninsula County Council be asked to advise if there were sufficient funds in the rate struck to allow of any additional light being erected. Complaints were received, concerning the unsatisfactory time that the street lights were turned on and off. It was stated that the lights were often not on until well after dark, and that they were at times turned off at 11.30 p.m. The chairman and Mr W. H. Riddell were appointed to make inquiries. The secretary of the-Maeandrew Bay Rowing Club wrote stating that the com- . mittee would be agreeable to combine with the association- in holding socials on the Saturday and Monday evenings of Labour i Day week-end.—lt was decided that Messrs W, H. Riddell, W. Rowlans, and j F. Percy be > a sub-committee to work I with a committee appointed by the RowI ing Club. Mr Alexander Howie wrote protesting ! on behalf of the residents against the ; position of the street light on Stott’s , road. The dangerous turning on the Marine parade at Maeandrew Bay is causing some uneasiness, and the matter will be ! placed before, the Peninsula County Coun- ' cil, with a request that something be done ; to make the parade safer for the turning of traffic. It was suggested that a one- , way traffic thoroughfare be formed, con- ■ necting, Marion street with Colinswood | road. i It was decided to notify the Health Department of the condition of stagnant drainage at the corner of High and Queen streets,. Maeandrew Bay Township. It | is stated that the drainage is a menace i to public health. Mr W. H. Riddell reported on the suc- ; cess of the old-time dance, held on September 25.—-The chairman congratulated 1 the sub-committee on the capable manner 1 in which the function was managed.—A request was made that a similar evening ■ be held at an early date, A suggestion was made by the chairman that the committee should endeavour to combine with the various clubs and organisations in the district in an effort to hold a carnival week during the summer months, the proceeds to be devoted to paying off liabilities. —It was decided that the various clubs be invited to meet the Ratepayers’ Committee to arrange for carrying out the scheme. The treasurer reported that the receipts for the past month amounted to £sl 9s 3d, and the expenditure to £3l Is 3d.
