WOMEN MUSICIANS.

AN ENJOYABLE CONCERT. At . the meeting of the Society of Women Musicians of Otago, held on Wednesday night in the Women’s Club Room, the arrangements for the evening were in the hands of Miss Meda Paine. The president (Miss Ida G, White) briefly introduced the speaker for the evening. Who took as her subject “Modern British Beets in Song. Illustrations were given by members of Miss Paine’s Ladies’ Choir, and solos were sung by Miss Paine, Mrs Anderson, Mrs Ewart, and Miss Mary Wills. Miss Paine spoke of the contrast that exists between the songs of| the Victoria era and the songs of the present day—the great improvement in the verse from the literary point of view, and in the setting of the verse from the musical point of view; ajso instancing the wonderful way in which the music and verse are suited, the one to the other. Among the poets from whose works illustrations were taken were Edmund Yates, Eva Gore Booth, Moira. O’Neill, Walter de la < Mare, Edmund Lindsay Gordon. Hilaire Belloc, Rudyard Kipling, John Drickwater, and Alfred Noyes, the poems of these writers being set to music by Thomas Dunhill, Linda Phillips, Sir Charles Villiers Stanford, Hubert Hughes, t Maurice Besley, Armstrong Gibbs, Sir Edward Elgar, Martin Shaw, Arthur Somervell, Alee Rowley, and Gustave Holst. The singing of these various items was greatly appreciated by those present. Thc work of accompanying the singers was shared by Miss Meda Paine and Mrs Anderson. At the conclusion of Miss Paine’s talk, Mrs H. C. Campbell expressed the thanks of the members for one -of the meet interesting and enjoyable evenings the society has had, and her remarks were endorsed by very hearty applause.
