ROUND THE GORGES RACE. F. J, Grose (Papanui) won the 100mile . Canterbury Amateur Road Cycling Championship on Saturday, by gaining fastest time in the Round the Gorges Race. The handicap events (says the Christchurch Times) was won by S. Weir, a young rider from Riccarton, and brother of W. K. Weir, the prominent performer in cash cycling ranks. F. J. Grose is New Zealand amateur champion. He finished fourteenth on Saturday, and his riding time of 4hrs 30min 25 l-ssec was ICmin less than last year, and was a record for the race. Second fastest time was obtained by W. A. Christiansen (Yaldhurst), and third fastest by K. G. Lange (Yaldhurst). The winner, who is a slightly built rider, was eleventh last year. He finished looking remarkably fresh, and said that, apart from a little tiredness, he felt quite fit: He had no trouble with his machine. According to the speedometer of a car, Grose’s riding speed with the nor’-wester behind him was up to 32 miles an hour. That was on the stretch between Waddington and Rolleston. After the race Grose stated that J. L. Richards, who was also off the scratch mark, punctured near Glentui, and M. Gane (4min) punctured near the Waimakariri Gorge bridge. Grose, 4hr SOmin 25 1-Ssec; second fastest, W. A. Christiansen, 4hr 34min 46set; third fastest, K. G. Lange, 4hr SSmin 34 3-Ssec. At the Waimakariri bridge O’Brien was pushing the four-mimjte men up to 26 miles an hour, which left the scratch men little hope of catching them for miles. O’Brien kept at 26 on the concrete beyond Xaiapoi, where a bewildering detour had to be made. EIGHTY-MILE RACE. The 1930 Provincial Championship for professional riders, proifioted by the Auckland Cycle Club, was held on Saturday oyer a course of 80 miles between Cambridge and Papakura. The stiff wind which raged throughout, and at times reached gale force, made the contest one of the hardest and most gruelling in the history ot the race (says the correspondent of the Christchurch • Times). The race resulted in a good win for D. P. Dowman, of Taumarunui, of the 20-minute mark Dowman rode well all through, and also secured the championship blue riband for fastest time (4hr 36min 40sec). W. Pratney (Auckland, 32min), who gained second place and was beaten only by 30 yards, put up a plucky fight after having a spill when entering the Prince Edward Park ’at Papakura! G. Litchfield (Auckland, 20mih). was third. NOTES. Hubert Opperman averaged 24 miles an hour in leading home the field of 96 cyclists in the Professional Duniop-Per-dnau Road Race from GoulWn to Sydney- He rode the 130 miles in Shr 22min 30sec. In the amateur race over the same course, for which there were 111 starters, Edgar Johns, of Newcastle, put up the fastest time, Shr 46min 10 l-ssec, knocking nearly a minute off R. W. Lamb’s record for this race, Lamb's best time having been 6hr Omin 44 4-ssec. WAIMATE TO CHRISTCHURCH. The Waimate to Christchurch Road Race, which is to be decided on Saturday, is the longest cycle race ever held in the Dominion (says the Christchurch Press). The distance is 145 miles, the previous longest race being the famous limaru to Christchurch, of ■ 114 miles.
