Slßy—lt was with mixed feelings that I read an account in your paper of the New South Wales' Government scheme of relief work. It states that the rate ,of pay is the same as the award. I will grant that such is'the. case with these provisos—the duration, of employment is 30 hours’ work for every married man. That 30 hours is all he is entitled to until his number again falls due, which, according to the present rotary system, would certainly not be more 1 than once in seven months. I have- been registered four months and a-half, and my chance of a call up is still very remote. I would also like to add. a warning to. any man contemplating coming to Australia of the conditions prevailing here. Some persons I have, spoken with are confident they can obtain work in the far out back. Such would be a meet amazing fluke. Eighteen months ago I carried my swag from Sydney to Longreach, Queensland, in search of work,- and was unsuccessful. There are at present 600 men sleeping in the Domain here, and the night refuges are crammed. As a. further incident, I would cite the fact of .1000 men applying for work in response to an ; advertisement for labourers by Wirth’s Circus at a wage of £1 per week.
