OBITUARY.
MR 0. W. FOUNTAIN. The death took place on Tuesday at St. Hilda of Mr Charles - Walsey Fountain at the age of 94 years. Mr Fountain was born at Durham Hall, Norfolk, and he came out to Victoria in 1861 with his wife, coming on to New Zealand the following year. He took part in the Gabriel’s Gully gold rush, but did not meet with good fortune, so lie settled down in Dunpdin at his trade of french polishing. Mr and Mrs Fountain went to Wanganui during the ’nineties, and they kept an art shop there for some years, finally returning to the south. Mr Fountain was a director of the old Roslyn i ram Company, and was also prominent in the promoting of the Kaikorai • Tram Company. He was very well known in bowling circles, and was a life member of the Roslyn Club, and also of the Wanganui Club,. He took a great interest in the game up'to the last, and attended the last Elderly Bowlers’ Day gathering at the Dunedin - Club’s green, at which function he was the oldest bowler on the green. Mr Fountain, at the time of his death, was the sole remaining member of the committee which founded St. John’s Church, Roslyn, nearly 50 years ago, and it was hoped that he would be able to take part in the jubilee celebrations later in the year. ■Mr Fountain is survived by three sons—Messrs A. Fountain (Macaudrew Bay), Rupert Fountain (Dunedin), and E. Fountain (Wellington).
MR W. C. CHATFIELD,
(Per United Press Association.) , WELLINGTON, May 30. The death is announced of Mr W. C. Chatfield, aged 79 years, formerly one of Wellington’s leading architects. He arrived in the early ’sixties.. He was the founder and first president of the Aew Zealand Institute of Architects.
