In the amateur championship the exAustralian champion, Michael Scott, defeated the American Walker Cup player, Von Elm, at the twentieth. In the sixth round Jones beat Johnson, the American amateur champion, 1 up; and Grant (St. George’s) beat Scott, 3 up and 1, to play. Bobby Jones had another narrow escape, only beating Johnson by a ticklish putt on the last green. Jones, when 4 up, with 5 to play, looked ,an easy winner, but Johnson fought back gamely till Jones was dormy 1. Ten thousand people rushed to see a dramatic finish. Jones and Voight are the only Americans left in the last eight, and these two will meet to-morrow.
