It is the young who influence the varying fashion and vogue, and can carry off bold and striking effects; The middle-aged are anxious to keep in touch with the trend, although it may be prudent to tone it down.- It cannot be gainsaid that a welldressed community is more self-respecting, and likely to be more help, than a nation of slovens, so that the advantage in the long run is more than personal. The scornful flouting of convention in dress savours of a lack of politeness and urbanity. It may even be due to a greater vanity than dandyism, but f °. Inclination is confined to details, which are piquant but not unpleasing, and identity is preserved by little touches. The most agreeable instance of individuality in equipment of which one is aware is that of King George. His clothes follow the mode, but do not stress it. They are cut and made with due regard to his form, and bear the hall-mark of Style. The new season’s fashions. indicate quite a marked revival in the popularity of stripes, the white pin stripe having been definitely replaced by die coloured stripe, notably dull red and maroon. In worsteds the herringbone stripe, always sure of a good reception, will reappear, allied with coloured twist thread and various fabric settings. In colourings the . leaning is towards lighter blues and blue-greys, especially in tweeds, also greys of all shades. In Suits the,more pronounced*features of the season may be summed up as including shorter and lapel*, with pronounced soft roll effect, broadness in the shoulders, with narrower curved waists, and trousers of moderate width in the leg—neither slack “ bags ” nor close “ tubes." Jackets will have centre back seams without vents.Outside breast pockets largely predominate in all styles of coats. Compared, with last year, rile single-breasted jacket will oust the double-breasted reefer from pride of place. The up-to-date jacket carries no surplus material at the hips, u of medium lengthy and defines the waist without fitting closely. Overcoats will have centre bach seams with vents. The Chesterfield overcoat is «till the style most approved. Next in favour are the Raglan coats, while Ulsters follow. Double-breasted styles are worm almost without exception. T &J.
