MESS DECKS, BARRACKS, AND PARADE GROUND NEWS. By Bull’s-Eye. Personal. Major 0. H. Mead, D. 5.0., 5.0.R.D., leaves for Invercargill on Friday morning next. Ho will deliver a lecture to the Southland Officers’ Association in the evening. Brigadier M. M. Gard’ner, D. 5.0., officer commanding Southern Command, will arrive in Dunedin to-morrow and will pay a visit of inspection to the 0.8.H.5. barracks. According to the New Zealand Gazette (No. 37) dated May 22 the following transfers are announced:—Captain J. F. Hewitt, Ist Battalion, Otago Regiment, is transferred to the Auckland Regiment (Countess of Ranfurly’s Own). Dated April 30, 1930. Second Lieutenant J. G. Crawford, from the Hawke’s Bay Regiment, to be second leiutenant, with seniority as from April 1, 1929, and is posted to the 2nd C Battalion. Dated May 2, 1930. With reference to the notice published in the New Zealand Gazette No. 30 of April 17, 1930, relative to Second Lieutenant J. H. Cornford, for the words " Ist Battalion ” read “ 2nd C Battalion, Otago Regiment.” NAVAL RESERVES. R. The following which appears in general orders for May, 1030, may bo of interest to members of the R.N.V.R.:— In the event of a R.N.V.R. rating applying for enlistment into the New Zealand Permanent Forces, and being recommended for acceptance, the case will be referred to general headquarters for instructions before the man is attested. A certain procedure iu regard to the release of such men from the R.N.V.R. and acceptance for the Permanent Military Forces has been arranged with the Navy Office, but It is considered expedient that detailed instructions be issued from this office in each case as It arises. 12th FIELD BATTERY (HOW.). Presentation of Prizes. The presentation of prizes won by members of 12th Battery will take place at Central Battery this evening. I understand the 0.C., Captain L. A. Rhodes, will welcome officers and friends who care to witness the parade and presentation ceremony. Ist (C) BATTALION OTAGO REGIMENT. O.BiH-S. Barracks. The ’Otago Boys’ High School Cadets commenced a four days’ barracks at 10 o’clock yesterday morning at the school. The artillery section, with Captain K. W. R. Glasgow in charge, is undergoing its training at Central Battery, St. Kilda, and expects to carry out a live shell practice in the direction of White Island at 10 o’clock on Saturday morning. Lieutenant A. H. L. Sugden, N.2.5.C., is acting as adjutant to Major M. M‘P. Watt, M.G., who is O.C. barracks. The following members of the N. are attached to the instructional staff:—S.S.M. (W. 0.1) J. Gumming is conducting an h.c.o.’s class, S. (W. 0.1) A. W. Johnson maxim gun instructor, S.S.M. (W. 0.1) W. R. C. White general instruction. (W. 0.2) R. C, Allen instructs in weapon training and supervises the firing for the Imperial Challenge Shield. S.-Sergcant T. A. S. M'Kenzie, Corporals P. G. Monk and W. K. M'Donald, general instruction duties. 3rd (C) BATTALION OTAGO REGIMENT. C Company, Oamaru. After holding the Campbell Statuette for two years in succession and being, as was confidently hoped, well in the Tuning to annex it a third time, C Company has had to accept defeat. This year the much-coVetcd prize has been won by the Devonport Company, with C Company (Oamaru) second, and Wanganui third. As the marks arc not yet available, it is not known by what margin the statuette has been won for the Northern Command, but by those who witnessed the inspection of C Company at Oamaru last month it is not anticipated that they lost by many points. OTAGO OFFICERS’ CLUB. Ladies' Evening. The first of a series of “ Ladies’ Evenings” will be held at the club rooms, Moray place, on Wednesday next, Juno 4. The committee has arrangements well in hand, and an enjoyable night is being looked forward to by a large number o'! officers and their friends.
