CLERK’S FOOLISH ACTION.
DESPONDENT ABOUT HIS PROSPECTS. (Per United Press Association.) - WELLINGTON, May 22. Supporting himself on crutches, a clerk, aged 22. whose name was suppressed appeared before Mr E. Page. S.M.. in the i ohee Court to-day on a chare? of attempting to commit suicide It was stated by tho police that the young man became despondent about his prospects in his employment last November, and he jumped 30 feet over a concrete retaining wall. As a result he had been in hospital since, and he had not yet fully recovered. He was convicted and discharged. Sub-inspector Lopdel! said that the young man’s parents lived in the country and he had been sent to work in n city office. Ho suffered a nervous breakdown. On a Sunday morning be went to the terrace overlooking Boulcott street, and after throwing bis bat over the wall, he himself jumped. Hospital expenses totalling £BO had > been incurred. His counsel said the accused had been earning onlv £lO a month in the city and be had lived a “hand-to-mouth'' ex istence. as bis wages were only sufficient to cover living expenses. It appeared that, he became despondent over his peeffi. and succumbing to a state of depression not uncommon with one of bis age. attempted to take his life. His parents were anxious to take him home for a year. They would also pay his hospital expenses.
