(From Qua Own ; Cobbespondent.) TAPANUI, May 20; RIFLE • SHOOTING. - There was only a email attendance on Saturday at the Tapanui range -when the first '.shoot of the season . took place. Owing to the inclement conditions, only one ranee was fired.

Football. : west otago sub-union. A general meeting of the West Otago Sub-union was held at Kelso on Thursday evening when "Mr P. Boylen presided over the following delegates:—Messrs N. M'Bitchie and J. M'Lay (Heriot). W. B. Naylor and J. S. Varcoe (Tapanui), W. -Corcoran- and G. Bankin (Waikaka), and W. G. MlSenzie and F. Spittle (Waikoikoi), R. Penman and A. Herbert (Moa Flat). .-.■■■• . letters were received from the Tapa-. nui, .Kelso,' and Waikoikoi Schools ac-' khbwledging,thanks for footballs„received. An account amounting to fl 9s was passed for payment. - The secretary of the Northern-South-land 'Sub-union. Lumsden. wrote asking that a date be fixed for the annual match, and. suggested' that, one towards the end of June be selected. It w*- decided to advise'the 'sub-union that owing : to. prc8i t conditions the matter would be held .over until'.next meeting-July 12 was as; a -possible date and the matter.left in the hands of the Emergency Committee. .-'.., • The' secretary : of the Tuapeka Sub;union wrote asking; that- the date fixed for thie annual county fixture at the Alexandra Conference,-July 19, also be a Topp Cup .challenge match. ■ It was decided that the Topp Cup be played for. on that date, provided the West - Otago : Sub-union received all the gate money; the' same as for an annual fixture match. A letter was received from the secretary of the Otago Eugby Football Union advising • that his' committee was prepared to' reserve seata for the members of subunions,- but all applications were to be in before June i. ■. The following transfers vtere ,'approved: A. Knight (Kaikorai), J.: Swan (Pirates), C. Young- (Y.M.C.A.); Colin and Gerald Campbell (Maheno), to Moa Flat Club; H. Parsonage' (Wellington), -Li, Peatt (Taieri)', and W.- Black (Waikoikoi). to Tapanui Club. The transfer of W. B. Cooke from the White Star; Clubito; Tapa;nui wad.held over until a:letter of con-, firmation-was'received.''.,..* , The : following ' notices of motion were • received from' the- Heriot <Club:—-'(1) "That rule 6> 0.R.U.,-be altered,to,read: 'That, the Committee of Management' of the- sub-union to consist of. two delegates from senior clubs and one : delegate from junior ,clubs. J " (2) "That the atmual; subscription be £3 3s for senior clubs, ; £2 28 for-junior, and clubs playing more than one team £i 45." • -'ln moving the notices of motion, Mr M'Ritchie said that in accordance with other sub-unions the junior clubs should only have one Vote instead of two as atpresent, and his club was of the opinion : .'that- the rule should be amended according -to' his club's motion.—Mr B.'. ■ Penman • rose to a point of order, and moved that '• the letter be received. Rules were then discussed at some length, and the chairman pointed out that his interpretation of the * Jrules was that the motions were in and asked for the motion;to proceed in the' usual manner.' —The . motions were seconded by, Mr M'Lay, who said that in the interest of, football generally senior clubs were entitled to'more voting power on the subunion than junior clubs,, and his club desired that the West Otago Sub-union should fall into line sub-unions. —The motions were carried. Mr J. S. Varcoe, who represented the sub-union at the . conference of, delegates at Alexandra on May 1, gave-ari interesting' repojft-'of the proceedings. Messrs G. Nelson and D. Jolly, representing' the Otago. Rugby Football Union, were also present.: Ha .connection with the rulesf of the White Horse Cup, Mr Varcoe raid that they, were discussed at some length. It .was pointed out that the cup had originally been given to the Vincent County, which tody decided, to include other sub-unions, and drew up rules accordingly, which were considered-unsatis-factory. The Vincent delegate said that they; did not desire to relinquish control of the cup. and it was unanimously agreed that the Vincent Sub-union be requested, to retain the trophy for competition in its district only. Should the local subunion at any, time desire" selectors from Dunedin to view their county matches, Mr Varcoe reported .that; they'., would be pleased to accept an invitation. B Grade football ..was discussed, and it was pointed out that if the county sub-unions considered that B Grade was interfering with A ,Grade the sub-unions would have to be firm in their administration in. its endeavours, to suppress such,a position. In conclusion, Mr Varcoe suggested that in the near future country football should be confined to A Grade and juniors under 18 years. Sub-union fixtures and other matches were : arranged and approved of as follows:—Country match at Dunedin, August 5 and 7 (as decided at conference); West Otago v. Tunpeka, July 19; Vincent v. Maniototo, July 26; Vincent v. Tuapeka, August 16; West Otagp v. South Otago, suggested to be played at Balclutha on August 23. The following were suggested as seven-a-side dates:—South Otago, August 30; West Otago, September 6; Tuapeka, September 13; Maniototo, September 20; Vincent,; September 27. Mr Naylor gave notice of motion that a special general meeting-be called to discuss the question as to whether Second Grade football ln.thedistrict'be eliminated, and 'that there' be two grades,' viz., • A Grade and juniors, the latter to consist of players 18 years and" under. It was decided that three rounds be played for seniors and two f6r juniors. It was resolved < that a fresh draw be mnde for the third round and that the gate money be given to the Bub-unioii. Tapanui v. Heriot.—The game between Tapanui and Heriot was played at Heriot on Saturday before a small attendance under cold and wet conditions. After a very keen and hard-fought game, with very few glimpses of good football, Heriot succeeded in defeating last year's banner winners by. 8 points (a try and a converted try) to nil. Waikaka-v, Kelso.—At Kelso, Waikakn easily defeated the home side by 15 points to nil. The game was confined almost entirely to the forwards, the greasv ball making back play difficult.
